Headscarves protest enters fifth day; Muslim Central Committee springs into action

Uppinangady, July 17: Muslim girl students of Ramakunjeshwara First Grade College continued their protest into the fifth day on Tuesday. A delegation of Muslim Central Committee paid a visit to the College now is holding talks with the College management.

The students are protesting against the College's decision to ban headscarves. Since they were not allowed to protest inside the campus, they are holding the protest outside the college gate.

Discussion with regard to the scarf issue is expected to be held under the leadership of K Ram Bhat, Honourary President, Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha, with representatives of managements of the various private educational institutions in Puttur.

Due to protests from students, the College authorities had convened a meeting with their parents. The parents had appealed to the College to allow their wards to continue wearing headscarves. But the College authorities refused to accept their plea stating that if the students' demand is met, some other students from other religious communities would also demand religious freedom.

Following the failure of this meet, the students have continued their protest.

Mangaluru, May 28: As many as 19 labourers, who were stranded in Lakshadweep island due to lockdown following COVID-19 outbreak, have been brought back to Mangaluru by a boat ' Amindivi' on Thursday.

On their arrival, they were subjected to medical examination and were warmly welcomed by their family members who had come to receive them at the Port.

The deceased was running a hotel named Hotel Samtappa here.

Bengaluru, Mar 31: Bengaluru Central Crime Branch on Tuesday seized as many as 1,000 fake N95 masks amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

However, the police are yet to make arrests in the case.

Investigation in the case is underway and more details in this regard are awaited.

Recently, Noida Sub-Divisional Magistrate with a team from the Health department busted a fake sanitiser and mask factory.

Notably, the Central government recently had brought masks and hand sanitisers under the Essential Commodities Act up to June 30 as the novel coronavirus pandemic led to shortages and black marketing of these items.

Any person found guilty under the Act may be punished with imprisonment up to seven years or fine or both and can be detained for a maximum of six months.
