KSOU centre inaugurated in Touheed Girls' College

Gangulli, July 17: The inauguration of the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) centre – in collaboration with the Bharath Post Graduate College, Chennai – was held at the Touheed Girls' PU College, here recently.

Speaking on the occasion K Shivananda Karanth, writer, columnist and retired lecturer, emphasized the importance given to education and literacy especially for women in Islam and with many examples he called upon them to go from basics to higher education to be on par with their counterparts of other communities.

Brs. Alban Rodriguez, Principal, Dandateertha PU College, Kaup, in his address called upon the students to be more attentive and serious in their studies. He asked them not to be discouraged in the initial hurdles of the distance education and work hard to achieve their goals.

The function was presided over by Abdul Hameed Shaikhji, Treasurer, Touheed Educational Trust.

The function started with “Qirat” (invocation) by Hafiz Samiullah.

Akhter Ahmed Khan (Administrator) invited the distinguished guests to the dias, welcomed the gathering and compeered the programme.

Amjad Sheikh gave a brief introduction of the KSOU and conducted the related question and answer session. The relative prospectuses were distributed to the newly admitted / aspirant candidates.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In an operation, forest officials of Puttur has arrested two persons as many elephant tusks at Puduvettu in Belathangadi taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

Forest officials said on Wednesday the accused nabbed last night were identified as PK Dinesh from Madikeri and V Kumar from Hassan district.

Both were caught while trying to sell tusks the value of which was estimated to be lakhs.

Bengaluru, Aug 2: A total of 5,532 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Sunday.

With this, the Karnataka's COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,34,819 positive cases, including 74,590 active cases and 57,725 discharges.
So far, 2,496 deaths have been reported from the state.

India's COVID-19 count on Sunday crossed the 17 lakh-mark with 54,736 positive cases and 853 deaths reported in the country.

"The total COVID-19 cases stand at 17,50,724 including 5,67,730 active cases, 11,45,630 cured/discharged/migrated and 37,364 deaths," said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Bengaluru, June 21: An assistant sub-inspector of police who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 infection in city-based Victoria hospital passed away on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday as he did not respond to the treatment for coronavirus.

The 59-year-old ASI was attached to the Wilson Garden traffic police station in Bengaluru. He tested positive for coronavirus on June 18 and was rushed to the COVID ward in Victoria hospital on June 19. He had fever for the last four days. His wife and two children have been quarantined. According to the police, the station has not yet been sealed down and no policemen have been quarantined.

The Wilson Garden ASI is the third Bengaluru police personnel to die of COVID-19 in the last one week. Earlier, an ASI from the VV Puram traffic police station had died undergoing treatment. On Saturday morning, a head constable from the Kalasipalya police station who was admitted at Victoria hospital passed away. The series of deaths in the police department has created fear among other policemen across the city.

One the other hand, dozens of policemen were tested positive in different parts of Karnataka today including 21 from two police stations of Bengaluru. 

Around 15 policemen from the Kalasipalya police station and five policemen from the Ashok Nagar traffic police station tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday.

In Kalasipalya, three ASIs, head constables and police constables have tested positive. In Ashok Nagar traffic police station, a probationary sub-inspector, an ASI, two police constables and a lady constable tested positive for the virus.

One more police constable working in Bandepalya police station also tested positive. Seven policemen who were in his primary contacts have been quarantined. BBMP officials have begun the process of fumigating the station premises and its surroundings.
