Mangalore, July 22: In what could have been a major tragedy, a giant girder slipped from the lorry and landed on the road in the city while being transported to the site of under construction parallel bridge on River Netravati near Thokkottu on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 12:00 noon within a few seconds after two cars over took the girder-laden lorry near Jeppina Mogaru, here.
The 33.5-meter-long girder was completely damaged causing heavy loss. It is learnt that the broken axle of the lorry caused the accident.
The parallel bridge on Netravati is being built using around 100 girders. These girders are placed on bridge abutments and foundation piers. In turn, a bridge deck is built on top of the girders in order to carry traffic.
The incident led to traffic jam for more than half an hour. However, authorities took immediate measures to clear the debris from the road.
