Mangalore, July 23: Nagara Panchami, one of the ancient and sacred festivals of coastal region, was celebrated with great fervour, pomp and gaiety on Monday as 'Naga' occupies a distinct place in Tulu Nadu.

It is celebrated on Panchami in Shravan month (fifth day after the new moon of Shravana month) as per Hindu calendar.

On the day, people go to temples and snake pits to worship Naga Devata (Serpent). It is believed to be one of the most auspicious days of the entire year. Kukke Shree Subramanya temple, Kudupu Shree Anantha Padmanabha Temple and Anantha Padmanabha temple at Manjeshwara are famous temples dedicated to Naga where Nagara Panchami is celebrated in a grand way.

In fact, a 'serpentine' queue of devotees was found on Monday at various temples across the district to offer pooja to the idols of Naga and seek his blessings for the well-being of the family. They offered milk, tender coconut, honey, turmeric and flowers to the idols of Naga.

Said to be the god of fertility, several couples who do not have children, offered prayers to the Serpent on the day.

The 'naga bana' situated at the backyard of Kudpu Shree Anantha Padmanabha Temple saw thousands of devotees carrying offerings like tender coconut, milk, honey etc to offer it to the god. Special poojas like 'Panchamrutha abhisheka', 'Naga Thambila' were offered by the devotees to the God. After the 'Mahapooja,' 'annasantharpane' (free meals) were served at the temple. A large number of devotees also visited Sharau Mahaganapathy temple and offered their offerings to Naga idol outside the temple.

Apart from the poojas in the temples, poojas were also offered at most of the 'nagasbanas' installed at the household levels, localities etc.

Nagara Panchami is synonymous with 'Manjal eretha gatti' (sweets made in turmeric leaf). It is a typical dish prepared in all the houselholds who observe this festival in the region.

Mangaluru, June 14: Private schools under the aegis of Association of English Medium Schools in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi urged the State government to reimburse the arrears of the fee related to admission of students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

Speaking to newsmen here on Sunday association president Y. Mohammed Beary said the State government has not cleared the arrears for the last two years. “The 400 private schools in two districts have to get around Rs 2 crore,” he said and added that the overall arrears that the government has to pay to schools in the State are around Rs1,200 crore.

Mr. Beary said arrears have made the school managements like his, who collect annual fees of about Rs 20,000 from a student, hard to function. Due to lockdown from March the schools could not conduct annual examinations and hence they could not collect pending fees from parents.

Haris said that nobody is talking about it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not talking about it and nothing is happing.

"About Kashmir, it is better to say less as nobody is talking about it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not talking about it and nothing is happening. It does not look good," he told media.

"I think leaders should be brought to the table and discussion on issues should take place. Do whatever has to be done for the country," he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.
