Beedi workers to lay siege to DC office on Thursday

Mangalore, July 23: Beedi workers affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress will lay siege to the Office of Deputy Commissioner in the city on Thursday, July 26, demanding the fulfillment of their four-point demand.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Monday, HV Ananatha Subba Rao, General Secretary, Karnataka State Committee of AITUC, said that the government should immediately address the problems faced by the beedi workers of twin districts of coastal Karnataka.

“There are around five lakh beedi works in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District who are facing various problems due to the anti-poor policies of the government”, he said.

Explaining the problems of beedi workers, he said that due to the delay in release of scholarship amount to these children for past three years, and the move to shift onus of distributing scholarship from office of commissioner for beedi workers welfare to department of education, a large number of children are deprived of scholarship money.

“The number of beneficiaries eligible for scholarship from the academic years 2009-10 and 2010-11 has been reduced. Now a days nearly 75% of children of beedi workers are not receiving the scholarship”, he said. He demanded that the government should increase the number of beneficiaries for the academic years 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12.

He lamented that schools are receiving belated instructions from the commissioner's office directing students to apply for scholarships.

Demanding the government to focus on empowering office of commissioner for beedi workers welfare, Mr Rao said that such an office must be established in Mangalore too.

He also said that the new move to deny scholarship to children below 14-years citing free and compulsory education guaranteed under Right to Education Act cannot be acceptable. “Parents have to spend large amount of money of their children's education even if it was free education”, he said.

P Sanjeeva, President, South Kanara Beedi Workers Federation (SKBWF) and T Shekhar, Treasurer, SKBWF were present among others in the press meet.

Bengaluru, Jul 21: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday said that everyone has to fight COVID-19 while maintaining a stable economy and lockdown is not the solution.

While briefing the media after a meeting with Health Minister B Sriramulu and officials here, CM Yediyurappa said, "There will be no lockdown from tomorrow, people need to get back to work, the economy is also very important. We have to fight COVID-19 while maintaining a stable economy. Lockdown is not the solution, now restrictions will be placed only in containment zones."

"People who came from Maharastra and Tamil Nadu added to the COVID-19 cases in Karnataka. Experts have suggested a 5T strategy - Trace, Track, Test, Treat and Technology. Our COVID warriors are working day and night to safeguard the people of the state, we have to maintain social distance, wear a mask while going out," he added.

CM Yediyurappa further said that more than 80 per cent COVID-19 cases in the state are asymptomatic.

"Five five per cent need ICU or ventilators, 11,230 beds are kept ready for the use of people including private hospitals, medical colleges. The real-time dashboard is ready to serve the people. Now onwards, test report will be given within 24 hours. SSLC exams were conducted successfully. More than 8 lakh students wrote exams in such a situation," he said.

Commenting upon the allegations of COVID-19 mismanagement labelled by opposition leaders, CM Yediyurappa said, "I request all the opposition leaders not to make unnecessary comments. I request Siddaramaiah, D K Shivakumar and others to suggest us valuably to fight corona together."

"We will give all the details which are required to D K Shivakumar, Siddaramaih, H D Kumaraswamy. Not even one-rupee corruption is done in COVID-19 management. We will give you all details. No official misused any funds, being opposition leaders, you have all rights to check documents, we will provide them," he added.

Taking to Twitter, Health Minister B Sriramulu said that the decision to raise the salary of 2,000 AYUSH doctors to Rs 45,000 was taken in the meeting.

"The decision to raise the salary of 2000 AYUSH doctors to Rs 45,000 was taken at a meeting chaired by our Hon. Chief Minister Shri @BSYBJP. Assurance has been given that the demand of private AYUSH doctors too will be reviewed and a decision regarding the same will be taken at the earliest. All doctors who were protesting for the same have withdrawn their resignations and reported to work," he tweeted.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: BJP leader and Karnataka cabinet minister BS Sriramulu's daughter Rakshita's wedding will take place with Sanjeev Reddy here on March 5. The nine-day function will cost crores of rupees.

For the wedding, decorations and arrangements are being done at Sriramulu's home here.

The reception will take place in Bengaluru Palace Ground on March 5.

"I couldn't invite you all in person but I tried to welcome you all. Through the media, I am again inviting you all. We are not performing a pretentious wedding. I invite you all on March 5 at Palace Ground," Sriramulu said.

After BJP leader Janardhan Reddy's daughter's marriage in Bengaluru Palace Ground, the marriage of Sriramulu's daughter is being considered one of the costliest marriages in Karnataka's history.

Mangaluru, Jul 2: A BJP MLA in Dakshina Kannada has tested positive for covid-19.

Dr Bharat Shetty, who represents Mangaluru North Assembly constituency, took to Twitter to confirm the news.

“I have been tested covid-19 positive. With all your blessings, I'm recovering and will be under treatment for few days,” he tweeted. 

He also requested the people to maintain social distancing, wear masks while going out and wash hands frequently.
