Konkan Railways to start sixth rake for RORO service after monsoon

Mangalore, July 24: Nandu Telang, Deputy Chief Commercial Manager, Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd has said that KRCL is planning to introduce sixth rake for its roll-on roll-off (RORO) service after this monsoon.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, Mr Telang, said that the RORO service, which enables carrying loaded trucks directly on the railway wagons between two destinations, was started with one rake in 1999 and now it has five rakes in the system.

He said that considering steady growing demand from truck operators, KRC has decided to introduce sixth rake on the Konkan Railway route.

He said that for KRCL the RORO services were unique for the past 13-years and Railway Board was keen to start similar venture in other railway units under Indian Railway. "The Union Railway ministry has consulted KRCL and it will be their call as to when and where they intend to start a similar service in the future," he said.

KRC, which carried 35,648 trucks through its RORO service in 2011-12, earned Rs 35.64 crore through this. In spite of economic slowdown during 2008-09 and 2009-10, Konkan Railway earned Rs 22.43 crore and Rs 23.59 crore, respectively through RORO service, he said.

The 721-km RORO service between Kolad in Maharashtra and Surathkal in Karnataka takes around 21-24 hours. The truck operator, who makes two trips a week by road between these two destinations, can make three trips a week with the service.

Bengaluru deploys surveillance team to keep eye on people coming from other states

Bengaluru, Jun 18: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has deployed a COVID-19 infection control "surveillance team" to look after travellers coming from other states.

Those coming to Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural Districts must undergo a 14-day home quarantine.

The Bengaluru Mayor today inaugurated surveillance team at Dr Raj Kumar Glass House.

Deputy Mayor Ramamohan Raju, Health Standing Committee Chairman Manjunath Raju G, Special Commissioners D Randeep, Manjunath, Superintendent of Police Mr Murugan and other officials were also present in the event.

There are 7,944 coronavirus cases in Karnataka including 2,843 active cases and 4,983discharged. 114 patients have succumbed to COVID-19 in the state. 844 positive cases were reported in Bengaluru Urban and 39 in Bengaluru Rural.

Dammam-Mangaluru first direct repatriation flight under VBM on June 21

Mangaluru, June 10: The first direct repatriation flight from Damma to Mangaluru International Airport under Vande Bharat Mission will be operated on June 21.

Thousands of people from coastal districts of Karnataka are stranded without flights in different parts of Saudi Arabia after the announcement of covid lockdown in March this year.

Even though the government of India launched Vande Bharat Mission to repatriate Indian expatriate through special flights, no flight was scheduled from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru.

Several organisations had exerted pressure on the government of India and government of Karnataka to bring back stranded Kannadigas from Saudi Arabia.

With the sole intention of helping the stranded Kannadigas, a few philanthropists in Saudi Arabia last month formed an NGO called Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum under the leadership of Zakariya Bajpe and Sheikh Expertise.

Actor Darshan’s fan smashes cop’s face with boulder

Bengaluru, Feb 18: A fan of Kannada film star Darshan smashed the face of a police constable with a boulder when the latter asked him to come in the queue to a party to celebrate the star’s birthday.

The incident happened past midnight on February 15 near the residence of the film star where his birthday was being celebrated.

The injured police constable has been identified as Devaraj, attached to the Jnana Bharathi police station.

The film star’s managers had not made arrangements to handle a huge crowd that gathered near his residence and police had a tough time controlling the crowd.

Constable Devaraj was deputed to duty at the party and tried to get the crowd to fall in line.

As the police carried out a mild lathi-charge to control the crowd, a fan of Darshan came up with a boulder in his hand and smashed the face of the constable Devaraj from very close distance. The constable collapsed on the spot and the attacker ran away.

The impact was such that Devaraj’s nose was fractured and he sustained an eye injury. He was admitted to a private hospital and his condition is said to be serious.

The R R Nagar police have registered a case under IPC sections 353 and 352. The cops have launched a hunt for the accused and they are obtaining CCTV footage from the spot.

A complaint is being registered against the organisers of the event and an investigation is on. Several neighbours of Darshan have also complained to the police about the chaos on February 15.
