Mangalore, July 26: In a scathing attack on the BJP-led State Government in the Assembly, U.T. Khader, Congress MLA, accused the present dispensation of neglecting Dakshina Kannada in terms of development.

Raising the issue during a debate on demands of various departments in the State Budget, Mr. Khader said funds had not been sanctioned to repair roads, construct classrooms, primary health centres and provide drinking water to the affected people in the district.

The Mangalore MLA also sought an increase in the MLA's local area development fund from Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 3 crore.

He also took a dig at the BJP leaders for not giving any representation to the district in the Cabinet. “The district has been neglected economically and politically after D.V. Sadananda Gowda stepped down as Chief Minister. Frequent transfers of officials and deputy commissioners has impeded development work in the district,” he said.

Stating that most of the roads under the Public Works Department had been damaged in the district, he accused the Government of diverting funds to north Karnataka in the name of regional imbalance. The Government had been discriminating against Dakshina Kannada while sanctioning funds, he said.

Except Infosys Technologies Limited, no IT companies had set up units in IT Park at Pajeer near Mangalore, he pointed out and alleged that some firms had grabbed land for low prices. Similarly, no companies had set up units at Export Promotion Park at Ganjimutt, 21 km from Mangalore, the Congress MLA alleged.

Mr. Khader, who is also the KPCC secretary, urged the Chief Minister to take steps to provide housing loans at one per cent interest to government employees.
