CFI continues Hijab protest: stages human chain in city

Mangalore, July 26: Activists Dakshina Kannada district unit of Campus Front of Indian on Thursday formed a human chain at Jyothi Circle in the city blocking the traffic for few minutes to register their protest against the alleged communally motivated measures by Sri Ramakunjeshwara First Grade College located in Ramakunja in Puttur Taluk.

The College authorities had lodged complaint against 14 students including Mohammed Tufail, the State Unit President of CFI following a massive protest in front of the College on July 20 demanding the College to allow the Muslim girls to wear headscarf on the campus.

Addressing the protesters Haidar Habeeb, DK district unit president of CFI said that by imposing ban on hijab of Muslim girls Ramakunjeshwara College had made it clear that it was not ready to uphold the secular values of Indian constitution.

“Moreover, the College authorities had lodged false cases against peaceful protesters, who were demanding justice to the Muslim girl students of the College, who had been kept away from the classes for wearing head scarf. This move clearly shows their communal agenda”, he said.

The agitators forwarded a memorandum to Karnataka Governor H R Bharadwaj and Union Human Resources Development Ministry through district administration seeking their intervention in the issue to bring justice to aggrieved students.

The memorandum accused the College of resorting to illegal and dishonest way to curb the Muslim students, who were demanding their constitutional rights. It demanded to withdraw cases registered against innocent students.

The memorandum termed the move of the College as “tantamount to an assault on the religious belief of students”. Any educational institution cannot impose ban on headscarf in India since the constitution of this country has guaranteed the citizens their religious rights, it added.

Bengaluru, May 19: Karnataka on Tuesday recorded the highest single-day rise in the COVID-19 cases in the state as a whooping 149 people tested positive for the virus. With the spike in new cases, the overall tally has risen to 1,395.

This is for the first time the state recorded 100 plus cases in a single day. So far, 40 people have also succumbed to the virus including three deaths today. 

The new deaths consist of a 61-year-old male patient, a resident of Ballari; a 65-year-old male patient, a resident of Vijayapura; and a 54-year-old male patient from Bengaluru.

Among the new cases, a maximum of 71 are reported from Mandya, followed by 22 in Davanagere, 10 in Shivamogga, 13 in Kalaburgi, six in Bengaluru Urban, four each in Udupi and Uttara Kannada, five in Chikkamagaluru, three in Hassan and one each in Yadagiri, Chitradurga, Vijayapura, Gadag.

Most of the new cases are of the people who traveled to Mumbai in Maharashtra, Solapur, Ahmedabad, and Kerala.

The remaining are those who came in contact with the people who had tested positive earlier.

At present, 811 people are actively taking treatment, while 543 have been discharged after recovery.

Mangaluru, July 28: In an unexpected development, the government of Karnataka has transferred Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh.

The development comes days after the IAS officer warned of legal action against those attacking cattle traders in the region.

Another IAS officer Dr Rajendra K V who was the CEO of Belagavi Zilla Panchayat, has been transferred and posted as the new Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.

Dr Rajendra is a medical doctor graduated from Bapuji Medical College, Davangere. He had secured the 32nd rank in the civil services examination in 2013.

Sindhu B Rupesh had taken over as DK DC in September 2019.  Now, she is posted as the director, electronic delivery citizen services (EDCS), DP & AR (e governance) Bengaluru.

Bengaluru, May 26: The state government today hinted that places of religious worship belonging to Hindus will be allowed to reopen from June 1, keeping social distancing and other norms in place.

In principle, the government has decided to open temples coming under the Muzrai department after Lockdown 4.0 ends on May 31. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

“Movement of people on air and rail has started. We have been receiving repeated pleas from devotees that temples should be opened. When this was discussed with the CM during a review of the Muzrai department, it was decided that temples can start from June 1,” Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary told reporters. 

Poojary said all day-to-day activities will be allowed in temples. “But religious fairs and ceremonies will not be permitted,” he said. 

Mosques and churches

Asked whether his government will allow opening of mosques and churches too from June 1, he replied that they don't come under his Muzrai dept.

Howvever, government sources said this may apply to mosques, churches and other places of religious worship as well. However, this decision will be subject to whether or not the Centre will allow places of religious worship to be open for the public after Lockdown 4.0, an official said. 

All places of religious worship have been closed for the public ever since Karnataka enforced a state-wide lockdown on March 24 to contain COVID-19.
