Population check only possible with mass awareness: Kateel

Mangalore, July 26: It is not completely possible to control population growth through law. It has to be brought down by creating awareness among people, said Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP.

He was speaking after inaugurating a programme organized at Ravindra Kala Bhavana in the city as part of the World Population Day on Thursday.

Although India is racing past China in terms of population it is heartening that the number of youth in the nation is increasing, which is a good sign for the country, Mr. Kateel said.

Dr. Rukmini M, District RCH Officer, expressed concerns over the rapid growth of population in India. If population growth continues at this rate, Karnataka which currently has a population of 6 crore 11 lakh people will have 12 crore 45 lakh people in the next 45 years, she said.

Prizes were distributed among University College students who had participated in the elocution and essay competitions as part of the World Population Day.

Dr. N S Chennappa Gowda, DK Deputy Commissioner, and Dhanalaxmi Janardhana, Vice President, DK Zilla Panchayat, also spoke.

Dr. K N Vijayaprakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayat and Dr. Laxmi Narayana Bhat, Principal, University College, Mangalore, were present.

Bengaluru, Apr 22:  Karnataka Women and Child Welfare Department has warned of action against those raising funds for Covid relief works, by using photos of children.

In a release here on Wednesday, the department said that several non-governmental organisations and voluntary groups were using the photographs of children to collect donations.

It has come to notice that several NGOs are using photos of children to raise donations to meet their food, health and other expenditure during the lockdown. However, this is against the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act," the Director of the ICDS scheme stated in a release.

Bengaluru, Jan 18: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the "flag-bearer" of the Indian culture and tradition.

In his speech at an event organised by Vedanta Bharati here, Shah said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is touring across the globe as the flag bearer of the Indian culture and tradition." To buttress his point, the BJP National President said Modi took a holy dip in Ganga and attended Ganga Arati in Varanasi before taking oath as the Prime Minister.

It was for the first time that Modi sent red sander to Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal to perform special prayers on behalf of the government of India.

Shah also slammed the previous governments for their wrong interpretation of secularism, preventing them from honouring the best things of the country. "But after a long interval we have a Prime Minister who sends across the message that we have a lot to give to the world," Shah said.
