ramuluKarwar, July 27: Preparations are in full swing for BSR Congress leader B. Sriramulu's 'Swabhimani Sankalpa Yatra' of which would commence here on June 29.

Crores of rupees were being spent. A huge pendal was erected on Karwar beach and hundreds of workers were busy setting up the pendal. Material for the special pendal were brought from Hubli at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh, sources of BSR Congress said.

A big stage would be built in front of the Mayuravarma Vedike on the beach from which Mr. Sriramulu would address the gathering.

BSR Congress has said that the main aim of the yatra was to know the problems of the poor in coastal and Malnad areas of Karnataka and against the “cavalier” attitude of the State Government towards the people in drought-hit areas.

According to Gajendra Naik, Uttara Kannada district president of BSR Congress, the party had decided to bring together around 15,000 people from different parts of the district. He said that people would attend the function on their own and the party would not bring them by paying money. He said that all expenses for food would be borne by the party.

But another leader of BSR Congress on condition of anonymity said that the party was new to the district and had no base here. So the party had to bring people from different corners of the district. To bring 15,000 people, thousands of vehicles would be used. The cost of the stage, pendal, food, and transportation would be around Rs. 1 crore and the party had promised to fund the expenses.

This bash by the BSR Congress, when the State was facing the worst drought ever, had come under criticism by other political parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party said that it was a “vulgar display of wealth” by the BSR Congress in the name of farmers and the poor.

Jagadeesh Birkodikar, district secretary of BJP, questioned the wisdom behind organising such a big bash when farmers were migrating because of drought.
