Monsoon havoc: bridge, roads submerged as rivers overflow; mudslide blocks Shiradi Ghat

Mangalore, July 28: The south-west monsoon visited parts of the State including the coastal districts and malnad with a vengeance on Friday. A farmer was washed away in flash floods while traffic on the Bangalore-Mangalore national highway was affected for over eight hours due to landslides.

With the heavy rains lashing Uppinangady region since Thursday night, the water-level in Gundya river rose thus submerging the Hosmata bridge.

The bridge has been inundated, thus disrupting the movement of vehicles on Uppinangady-Kadaba-Subramanya route. There was three feet water on the brdge in the morning, which rose to six feet by evening. Police personnel have been deployed to check the entry of the vehicles. With the disruption in movement of vehicles, the vehicles were using alternative road to reach Subramanya.

With the increase in water-level, water from Gundya river has entered arecanut plantations at Hosmata, Valya, Ulipu and Kutruppady too. The low-lying areas have been inundated. Gundya river inundated National Highway at Udane. There was four feet water on the highway from 11.30 am to 4.30 pm.

There were reports of landslide at 10 locations on the Bangalore-Mangalore national highway, throwing the traffic haywire on Shiradi Ghat road.

Vehicles were stranded for more than eight hours on either side of the road at two locations between Maranahalli outpost and Gundia, following mudslides. Earthmovers had to be pressed into service to clear the road for traffic.

With the heavy rains lashing catchment areas, Kumaradhara and Netravati rivers too are overflowing. Nethravati has reached danger level at few places. Kootelu, Valalu, Bajathoor villages on the banks of the river have been inundated. With Kumardhara river overflowing at Subrahmanya, snanaghatta (bathing ghat) too has been inundated. The devotees who want to take a dip in the river could not change their dress in the dressing room as the same has been submerged too.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: Special Investigating Team (SIT), headed by Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Sandeep Patil, subjected former underworld don turned social activist Muthappa Rai in connection with gangster and underworld don Ravi Poojary's criminal cases.

Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) said that the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Venugopal and police inspector Bulletin have questioned Rai in his house for more than two hours about Ravi Poojary case.

Muthappa Rai was allegedly one of the accused in builder Subbaraju murder case. They both were allegedly close in the initial days and they were like a team, said a senior officer. So Rai was questioned about their connection. Rai, who reformed himself many years ago, is into business and social service at present.

Mangaluru: The police team investigating the case of bomb planting at the international airport here on January 20, took suspect Aditya Rao to several places in the city where he had frequented in the past few months, police said on Wednesday.

Police had earlier recovered a box from his bank locker at Udupi that contained a white powder which he claimed was cyanide. The substance has been sent to the Forensic Science laboratory for confirmation.

On further interrogation, Rao told police that he had a locker in a bank in Mangaluru also, where he was taken. Only some papers were seen in the locker, police said. He was also taken to the room where he stayed while he was working at a hotel in Balmatta here and to a hardware workshop from where he had purchased some spare parts, they said.

A 'live' explosive device was found in an unattended bag near a ticket counter of the departure gate of the airport here on January 20, triggering a scare before it was defused at a nearby open ground.

Police had released a picture of a man captured on CCTV camera as the suspect who placed the bomb and Rao later surrendered. Meanwhile, sources said the airport authorities got an anonymous call on Monday evening that a bomb had been planted in the airport. After thorough search, it was found to be a hoax. City police commissioner P S Harsha has warned of stringent action against those who make such calls.

Bengaluru, Feb 27: About 60kg of unaccounted gold ornaments worth Rs. 21 crore were unearthed by officers of the Commercial Taxes Department of Karnataka Government.

The ornaments were recovered after the department conducted surprise inspections and raided business premises of wholesale jewellery dealers in Ranganatha Mansion and Sakalajee Market in Chickpet area of Bengaluru on Tuesday.

"The raid was based on information that many traders from other states visit the city and carry gold jewels without any valid documents and supply it to local jewellers without invoices," said Srikar MS Commissioner of Commercial Taxes in a statement.

The officers raided the premises of 23 jewellers and found 60 kg gold ornaments in stock which were not covered by valid documents. A penalty was levied on the undocumented ornaments.

"It is informed that the enforcement wing is keeping a close watch on the interstate movement of gold, silver and all the dealers in the state are hereby advised not to buy any goods without valid purchase invoices, added Srikar MS.
