attack3_thumb_other150_150Mangalore, July 30: Political observers see a link between the attack by a Hindu vigilante group on young men and women partying in a house at Padil here on Saturday and the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) political fortunes, and the very premise of the existence of the Sangh Parivar.

Associate professor in the Department of Political Science, Mangalore University, Rajaram Tolpady said the incident did not come as a surprise to him, considering the aggressive Hindutva indoctrination in the last 10 to 15 years in the coastal region, a BJP stronghold.

Mr. Tolpady said the result of this had been finding expression in different ways — attacks on churches and women, and raking up issues of religious conversion, cow slaughter and so on.

Describing it as “aggressive politics”, Mr. Tolpady said basically BJP was no different from other political parties when it came to supporting policies favouring globalisation. The only way for the party to show it was different was by projecting itself as a protector of “Hindu culture”. On the other hand, the Sangh Parivar needed to project itself as such for its very social existence, he said.

It was important for the BJP and the Sangh Parivar to assert and propagate the idea that Hindutva was in danger. “They have to whip up Hindutva feelings time and again” to divert people's attention from real issues such as development, unemployment and poverty.

Systemic support

Chairman of the university's Political Science Department Jayaraj Amin said activists of Hindutva outfits were confident that the system would come to their rescue with the BJP being in power.

Men from the lower strata of society were being used by various Hindutva outfits for spreading an ideology which was based on a perception of “culture being disturbed by men and women going to pubs”.

The BJP would reap electoral benefits only if they keep up the “frenzy” till the elections. It was a fact that the BJP wants to expand its base in the coastal region, he added.

He pointed out that the Hindutva brigade was silent when the administration itself organised a “rave” at St. Mary's Island in Udupi district.

Writer Sara Aboobacker said with the police failing to take adequate action thanks to political intervention, the cadres were so emboldened that they declared after the 2009 pub attack that they would do it again.

Bengaluru, May 24: In an effort to protect passengers and staff from the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has introduced a parking-to-boarding contactless journey at the airport.

With a greater emphasis on minimum touch and minimum exposure between passengers and airport personnel, BIAL aims to minimise all physical contact at the airport. The technology will continue to enable a seamless airport journey, with greater emphasis on health and safety.

"As the gateway to a new India, BLR Airport has a key role to play in helping passengers through this global health crisis by reassuring them that their safety is our top priority. We have introduced innovative contactless procedures to minimise exposure at the airport," said Hari Marar, MD and CEO, BIAL.

"These enhancements demonstrate our continued commitment to keep our passengers safe in this environment. We believe our new measures will boost confidence among passengers," continued Marar.

"BLR Airport is all geared up to welcome our passengers back and - working with various government departments - we're committed to offering them a safe experience by implementing the best-in-class standards, procedures and practices," Marar added.

Earlier, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that domestic flight operations will resume from May 25 noting that all airlines and airports were ready but it is not viable to keep the middle seat vacant as it will lead to hike in the ticket price and prescribed social distancing norms would still not be met.

Hubballi, Jan 29: Thousands of people took part in a protest march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) causing traffic snarl in the city on Tuesday.

Various Dalit organisations had taken part in protest organised under the aegis of the 'Samvidana Samrakshana Samiti'.

KPCC members including MLA Prasad Abbayya, former Minister A.M. Hindasageri and office-bearers also joined the protest.

They congregated first at B.R. Ambedkar Statue near the Head Post Office in Hubballi. Holding flags and banners, the protesters marched from Ambedkar statue to mini Vidhana Soudha covering Lamington Road, Sangolli Rayanna Statue and Kittur Chennamma Circle.

Mr. Abbayya said that despite opposition from various minority communities and progressive organisations, the Union government had not changed its stand. The opposition would continue till the new law was repealed, he said.

He termed the CAA as a draconian law that meted out injustice to not only Muslims but also to Hindus. “Giving citizenship based on documents is highly condemnable. At a time when the country is undergoing an economic slowdown, it is highly condemnable that thousands of crores are being spent to enact the law. The Union government should immediately abolish the new law,” he said.

They submitted a memorandum to the Hubballi tahsildar that was addressed to the President, seeking abolition of the new law. In view of the march, the police had diverted traffic and had made elaborate bandobast.
