A television journalist, 'covering' the Saturday attack on girls allegedly by Hindu Jagarana Vedike in Mangalore has claimed that his call to the police to report the incident was not picked up.

Naveen Soorinje, a journalist with a private channel, told Deccan Herald that he had called Raveesh Naik, the inspector of the rural police station, but the officer did not respond.

naveen_shettySoorinje, booked by the police in connection with the incident, said he was recording the incident as part of 'evidence gathering' and that he had no intention of abetting the acts of the Vedike members.

He also claimed that he had informed a reporter from another TV news channel to call the police to avoid a repetition of the earlier pub attack incident in which the media was accused of not informing the police. Soorinje claimed he received a call from his source, a Muslim boy, informing him about a group of 30 men conversing in Tulu executing the attack, in Padil.

“I could not inform the police at that juncture since I had to still verify the information and hence I went to the spot,” he said.

On arriving at the spot, Soorinje said, he saw a girl sitting outside and reading a newspaper while two boys were by themselves in another corner.

“Then a mob of 50 men barged into the homestay attacking the girls. If one were to go through the footage of the recordings we have, you can hear myself and my camera person screaming, asking the attackers to stop. We were only two of us and they were about 50. There was nothing we could do,” he said. However, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh termed it an act of irresponsibility on the part of the media. He said two journalists had been booked under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Contrary to the claim of Soorinje that he was informed by a source, Singh said he had a statement of a ringleader of the HJV about informing the media of the attack.

“From my knowledge, the call to the police was made at 7.20 pm while the incident, which was shot live occurred at 6.20 pm,” Singh claimed, adding that an inquiry will also be initiated against the police personnel concerned.

Soorinje alleged that the commissioner called another channel reporter about 1 am telling him that he will be framed. Singh, who confirmed of calling the reporter, said he had called to obtain certain information and to tell the reporter that such things were not acceptable.

“At my position, there is no way that I will make loose statements like fixing them or framing. The call was made in connection with the investigation and it was made at such a time because of the nature of the incident,” Singh clarified.

Feb 3: The Karnataka government is probably the only state to have so many nodal agencies to deal with investment proposals. There is the KIADB, Karnataka Udyoga Mitra, State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC), State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) and District Level Single Window Clearance Committee.

While the government claims these have been created to speed up the process of setting up industries, they’re only delaying it. “A four-to-five year delay in acquiring land has become the norm,’’ say industry sources.

“These entities are only adding layers of obstacles to investors and is not really helping industries,” said a senior IAS officer.

While DLSWCCs are headed by deputy commissioners are empowered to clear investment proposals up to Rs 15 crore, SLSWCC, headed by the industries minister, clears proposals more than Rs 15 crore and up to Rs 500 crore. Proposals worth more than Rs 500 crore have to be cleared by SHLCC chaired by the CM. These entities have to meet regularly and clear proposals. But often, these meetings don’t happen as scheduled. “The delay starts from here,” said Vasant Ladava, industrialist and member of Karnataka Industries and Commerce, Bengaluru.

The single-window agencies involving representatives of departments like industries, revenue, pollution control board and forest are supposed to collectively give necessary clearances required for industries. “But, of late, they have become only project approvers without other responsibilities, leaving investors in the lurch,” said Ladava.

In a shocking incident, a pharmacist-cum-production manager of an Ayurvedic product company in Chennai’s T.Nagar died after drinking a chemical preparation he reportedly formulated for tackling the Coronavirus.

The managing director of the company, who is an ophthamologist by qualification, was hospitalised after he fainted soon after he ingested the chemical component.

The deceased, K.Sivanesan, 47, of Perungudi, was with Chennai-based Sujatha Biotech, an Ayurvedic and herbal products company which was founded 30 years ago. It has a plant in Kashipur, Uttarakhand, where Sivanesan was working. Sivanesan had devised formulas of various products and used to visit his managing director Dr. Rajkumar frequently in the city.

Due to the lockdown, Sivanesan came to Chennai and stayed with his family in Perungudi. On Thursday morning, he procured the chemical component from a market in Parry’s Corner.

First he gave a small amount powder he derived from the chemical to 67 years-old Rajkumar who fainted after tasting it.

Even as he was being resuscitated, Sivanesan went into the kitchen of the house and gulped it in liquid form after adding water to it. He could not be revived.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, T.Nagar, Ashok Kumar, said, “Our investigation revealed that Sivanesan died after drinking the preparation he claimed would help COVID-19 patients. His managing director fainted after tasting it initially. Further investigation is on.”

Sivanesan was rushed to a private hospital in T.Nagar and declared dead by the doctors there. Later his body was shifted to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Teynampet police registered a case under section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code for unnatural death.

N.S.Vasan, designer-cum-media manager of the company said, “Due to the lockdown, Sivanesan stayed in the city and one day told us he heard of some medicine from U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent speech for curing Coronavirus. He said it would bring more immunity and help to prevent COVID-19. Deciding to test the effect of the medicine, he went to Parry’s Corner and bought the powder.” He added that Sivanesan must have taken a heavy dosage of the ‘drug’ and he was killed instantly.
