Mangalore, July 30: Raged by the attack on young boys and girls at a birthday party being held at a Padil homestay by saffron activists, the Mangalorean student community expressed its solidarity with the victims and observed an all-college bundh on Monday.

St. Aloysius College, St. Agnes College, Besant Women's College, Rosario College, Sharada College, Canara College, Badriya College and other colleges in the city, observed bundh in protest of the assault on the students at Padil.

Students and staff gathered for a protest meet at St Aloysius College campus. Addressing the gathering Fr Francis Almeida, Vice Principal of the College, called for a ban on the Hindu Jagarana Vedike and media for being a party to the incident. The Aloysian community condemns the attacks he said, adding that the district administration is scared of widespread protests from the people of Mangalore and hence has enforced prohibitory orders.

Fr Swebert D'Silva, Principal of the College, said that people of Mangalore must ensure that incidents of such are not repeated in the city.

Suman, Secretary of the Women's Forum of the College said that the assaulters have no right to say they are custodians of culture and protectors of their 'sisters'. “Which brother would want to molest his sister in public in front of cameras and manhandle her?” she asked, lamenting that India is not independent in the true sense of the term. The activists have no right to interfere in the lives of youth, she said, asking them and others who defend their actions to create a country of their own where they could follow their own principles.

Sheetal, a journalism student of the College, criticized the role played by a section of the media in letting the incident happen.

Another student who addressed the gathering wearing a pink shawl showed her solidarity for one of the girl victims, who was dressed in pink on the day of the assault. “This is my way of telling her that she is not alone. I am with her”, she said.

Donnet D'Souza, Sports Coordinator of the College, Sylvia Rego, Department of English, and other staff of the College also spoke.

The students were asked to write letters addressed to the Deputy Commissioner in large numbers to show their condemnation of the assault.

At St Agnes College too, students got together in protest. Gurudutt Kamath and Vijay Kumar, the two male student victims who were at the receiving end of the assault at the Padil homestay addressed the students. Mr. Kamath, revealing the background of the incident to the gathering said that about 14-15 of his friends had got together to celebrate the birthday of Mr. Kumar. “It was not a rave party and there were no drugs. The Deputy Commissioner has held an inspection himself and confirmed it. We had not played loud music too. It was just some light music that we were playing from our laptop. We were busy with cake-cutting, photo sessions and video sessions when about 40-50 people barged into the house and started thrashing us. If they are protectors of culture and are really cultured, they should have enquired about the whole thing in a civilized manner. They even stole our gold chains worth Rs. 2 lakh”, he said. Mr. Kamath urged the student community to raise their voice against the attacks in unision and use the social networking media to the fullest to create awareness among the masses.

'Girl victims must come out and condemn'

Speaking to mediapersons at the sidelines of the protest, Gurudutt Kamath said that he and his other friends have not been able to get in touch with the female victims of the assault. “We have been trying to enquire about them but have not been able to get in touch with them. They are not willing to speak. Yes it is their decision after all and they have their own concerns but we feel they must come out as there is nothing to be scared of”, he said.

Mr. Kamath said that the girls are regular visitors to his house and are not of bad character. “They eat at our house and frequently visit our house. My mother knew them well which is why she chose to come out and say it openly before the media defending them”, he said.

Lucknow, Apr 29: Tablighi Jamaat members, who got cured of COVID-19, have been asked by their organisation to donate their plasma for treatment of other coronavirus-infected patients, a move that the outfit thinks will help it shed its “villain” tag.

"Maulana Saad, in an open letter on April 21 to all Jamaatis who have recovered from the coronavirus (infection), has appealed them to donate their plasma to help others. The message has reached all the members," Maulana Anees Ahmad Nadvi, the manager of Tablighi Jamaat’s Lucknow branch, told PTI PTI on Wednesday.

"As per the Health Department data, over 50 per cent of corona patients are Jamaatis. Among them those who have recovered are being contacted and all of them are ready to donate their plasma," claimed Nadvi.

"We have till now contacted 400 Jamaatis. In the entire country, those who have recovered are also giving their plasma. Markaz has given instructions that no one should be left from donating plasma," he said. "Jamaatis are not doing any favour to anyone by giving their plasma.

This is a humanitarian step. This is true that Jamaatis are being presented as villains after coronavirus spread, but Maulana Saad has asked us to forgive those doing this," he said. Tablighi Jamaat leader Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is on the run after an FIR was registered against him by the Delhi police for organising a religious gathering in March this year despite restrictions to combat the coronavirus spread.

With some plasma therapy trial results rekindling hopes of it being a likely cure for COVID-19, the Uttar Pradesh government too had begun contracting patients cured of it for plasma donation, but the move was suspended after the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said the therapy was only at an experimental stage and there was no evidence yet to support that it can be used as treatment for COVID-19.

Uttar Pradesh Surveillance Officer, Dr Vikasendu Agarwal, said all those who have recovered from coronavirus, including Jamaatis, were being contacted for plasma donation, but the move has been suspended after the Centre’s statement on the issue.

Refusing to divulge the number of cured Jamaatis, he said "We were contacting them. They are not different from us. We were contacting all our patients and asking them that they could donate if they find it appropriate, as it would help other patients." "All of those contacted by us are ready for giving plasma," he said.

Chief Medical Officer, Lucknow, Dr Narendra Agarwal said all 28 Jamaatis, who were admitted in KGMU were contacted to donate their plasma and all of them agreed. "A proposal in this regard has been sent to the government.

After approval, their plasma will be taken," he said. With the plasma therapy gaining a lot of traction as a possible cure for coronavirus, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday clarified that it is at an experimental stage and there is no evidence yet to support that it can be used as treatment for COVID-19. Till the effectiveness of this mode of treatment is scientifically proven, its application except for research and clinical trial is illegal, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health Lav Agarwal said.

Dr Vikasendu said after the Centre's clarification contacting people for plasma donation has been put on hold. A further step will be taken on decision of KGMU which is working on plasma therapy here, he added.

Kalaburagi, Feb 20: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan on Wednesday said that 15 crore Muslims can dominate 100 crore Hindus.

"The time has now come for us to unite and achieve freedom. Remember we are 15 crore but can dominate over 100 crores," said Pathan while addressing an anti-CAA rally here.

"They tell us that we have kept our women in the front - only the lionesses have come out and you are already sweating. You can understand what would happen if all of us come together," he said.

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Protests have erupted across the country against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

Mangalore, Jan 1: Under the aegis of the Dakshina Kannada District Jatyateeya Paksha Sanghatanegala Janti Vedik, Members of Congress, Communist Party of India, CPI (M), Janata Dal (Secular) and other secular organisations will stage a dharna on January 2 here demanding a judicial inquiry into the firing on December 19.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday evening, former Bantwal MLA B Ramanath Rai said the dharna will be held before the statue of B R Ambedkar, near the Town hall, from 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs.

Mr Rai said allegations are being made that the trouble in the city on December 19 was orchestrated by certain political parties and leaders. The city police are also being accused of acting under the influence of the ruling government in invoking prohibitory orders to quell the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and later firing at the protesters that led to two deaths.
