Mangalore, July 30: Seemant Kumar Singh, Mangalore City Police Commissioner, on Monday said that he does not hold media as a whole responsible for the attack which took place on young boys and girls at a homestay in Padil in the presence of their cameras.

Addressing media persons at his office after a memorandum was submitted to him by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists' Association requesting him to drop the FIRs registered against media persons in connection with the case, Mr. Singh said that no media person has been arrested and that their role is still being investigated. “Although one of the arrested has told us that he had informed the media, we are not going by his word just as yet. The matter is being investigated”, he said.

Mr. Singh said that media persons arrived at the spot to do their duty. “However, you and I have a bigger duty and responsibility towards the society and you should have informed the police. The concerned media person has said that the mob outnumbered media persons at the spot and there was very little he could do. If you were really concerned, you could have done much more. All you had to do was dial 100”, he said.

When it was pointed out that many a time police do not respond to calls made by media persons, Mr. Singh said that he would direct all police officers to see that media persons' calls are attended to and revert back to them in case they are unable to pick calls for some reason.

Mr. Singh maintained that the video footage shot by media persons have helped in identifying some of the culprits behind the assault. “But had you informed us beforehand, there would not have been a need to go through the footage at all. The incident could have been prevented”, he said. Media persons focused more on capturing the victims on camera rather than the culprits, he alleged.

In response to a query on the inaction of police personnel also being present at the spot when the assaulters were in the homestay, Mr. Singh asked for evidence for the early presence of police at the spot. If police officers are found to have been guilty, action would be taken against them, he assured.

Denying that the police have registered FIRs against media persons for personal grudge and enmity, Mr. Singh invited media persons to name a few members from their side to be a part of a common committee along with the police to sort the matter out.

Earlier, a delegation of media persons led by P B Harish Rai, President, DK District Working Journalists' Association, submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner. Stating that it is the democratic right of the media to convey to the people what is happening in society, Mr. Rai requested Mr. Singh to drop the cases against media persons and create an environment where members of the media fraternity could carry out their job with freedom.

Tumakuru, Jan 8: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat stoked controversy on Wednesday by stating that 'Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is full of traitors'.

He was addressing the media after taking part in a pro-CAA rally organised by National Citizens Forum near the office of the deputy commissioner of the district here.

Bhat said, “JNU is full of traitors. Congress and communist parties have been generating anti-nationals there. But there is no need to close the university down. Modi government will handle it.”

“Nationalism should be infused among the students there through love and trust. They should be made to realize what the truth is,” he said.

Unfortunate, still he has poor followers to believe him.

He is safe at home and sacrifiers are poor boys who blindly believe and obey him.

This guy is sick and irriversible.

God will reward him so that his followers believe his exploiting orders.

Remember social media memes of Chinese companies exporting #BoycottChina hats and t-shirts to India? This time India’s sensational and saffronite TV anchor Arnab Goswami vindicated those memes by hosting an anti-China debate show which was sponsored by Chinese companies!

While the last night's debate was all about boycotting Chinese products in the wake of massacre of over 20 Indian soldiers by their Chinese counterparts in eastern Ladakh, the show was brazenly promoting Chinese products through advertisement placements.

During the debate, amongst the flashy headlines, there were two brand sponsorships that appeared: VIVO and Xiaomi. Both companies are giant Chinese multinational corporations.

Twitter user Nirmala Tai, who was among those who spotted this irony, highlighted two instances during the debate where the logo of one of the brands popped up, and one where Xiaomi was found promoting the Mi 10.

Many Twitterati used Goswami’s some of the favourite words such as ‘hypocrite’ and ‘anti-national’ to target him. They hit out at his channel for accepting sponsorship deals from Chinese brands at a time when anti-China sentiment is strong in the country.

New Delhi, Feb 7: The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Central government on a plea challenging the Constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and effective implementation of the Assam Accord.

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde also sought Centre's response on the plea filed by Assam Social Justice Forum.

The petition sought appropriate directions for taking effective steps for the implementation of Assam Accord, 1985 in letter and spirit and for conservation and preservation of the of a distinct culture, heritage and traditions of the indigenous people of Assam.

The Assam Accord, 1985, had fixed March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for deportation of all illegal immigrants irrespective of their religion.

The Bench also sought Centre's response on another fresh batch of pleas challenging CAA and tagged them along with other petitions pending in the matter.

One of the petitions, filed by the Association of Advocates from Maharashtra among others, sought to declare the Citizenship Amendment Act as discriminatory, arbitrary, and illegal and consequently set aside the impugned act as ultra-vires the Constitution of India.

On the other hand, over a hundred petitions have been filed in the apex court, for and against the amended citizenship law, which is facing opposition and protests across the country.

CAA grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who fled religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan and took refuge in India on or before December 31, 2014.
