Manipal university student bags first prize for Saha's Earth Day painting

Manipal, July 31: A painting of Tirthak Saha, a third semester student of International Centre for Applied Sciences (ICAS), a constituent of Manipal University, depicting earth in peril won the first prize at a national-level competition.

According to a press release issued by Manipal University here on Monday, the painting depicted the warming earth and melting Polar ice caps amidst the doomsday scenario.

He received the prize and a plaque from Union Minister of State for Earth Sciences Ashwani Kumar at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on the occasion of Foundation Day of Ministry of Earth Sciences on July 27.

Nobel Laureate R.K. Pachauri was present.

The competition was held at different institutions across the country and the prize-winning paintings were sent to Delhi where Saha's painting was adjudged the best.

The ICAS student's painting won the first prize in the inter-collegiate contest held at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) here on April 22 to mark the Earth Day celebrations.

Along with painting, other competitions such as quiz, slogan-writing, poster-making, debate and collage, were held in institutions of the university here.

The Union Ministry of Earth Sciences sponsored the competition, the press release said.

Man arrested under Wildlife Protection Act for biting snake to death in Karnataka

Kolar, May 7: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for biting a snake and peeling off its skin at Mustur village in Kolar district of Karnataka.

Mulbagal range forest officer KN Ravikeerthi said forest officials nabbed Kumar, a construction worker, at Mustur on Wednesday and booked him under the Wildlife Protection Act. He was under the influence of alcohol.

Ravikeerthi said Kumar's offence is non-bailable and attracts a jail term of up to three years. The remains of the snake were collected and sent to a lab to ascertain its species. Forest officials said the snake Kumar bit was not a viper as was reported earlier but a rat snake.

On Tuesday, Kumar was riding back home after buying liquor when the snake ca me under his bike's wheels. He tossed the injured snake around his neck, bit it and peeled off its skin. Kumar said the snake had troubled him in the past.

7 including parents held for selling a 13-month-old girl child

Davanagere, Jan 19: Seven people, including four women, were arrested for allegedly selling a 13-month-old female baby here on Saturday.

Police said that the baby was sold to a couple who had no child. The couple hailed from Ranebennur town in Haveri District of Karnataka. They sold the baby, which was their fourth child.

The arrested were identified as Kavita (26) and her husband Manjunath (couple who sold the baby), Dakshayani (34) and her husband Ravi (49) of Ranebennur, Haveri District (the couple who purchased the baby, Chitramma (44) Nurse, Kamalamma (45) and Karibasappa, who acted as middlemen for the deal.

166 stranded in UAE reach Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 23: A charter flight carrying as many as 166 people including a child stranded in United Arab Emirates today reached Mangaluru.

The flight was chartered by M Friends Charitable Trust, Mangaluru and My Community Foundation with the sole intention of helping the repatriation of stranded passengers such as pregnant women, elderly people and those who are in need of emergency medical care.

The flydubia flight FZ4617 took off from Dubai at 2 p.m. and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 7:22 p.m.

The passengers who arrived from UAE hail from different parts of coastal Karnataka and passengers themselves had borne the ticket fare for their travel.

M Friends president Haneef Haji Goltamajalu has thanked representatives of My Community Foundation and M Friends Trusty Ashraf Abbas Kunjattur, M Friends NRI leader Haneef Puttur, general secretary Rasheed Vittla for their efforts in chartering the flight.

In the last three weeks, 13 special flights with around 2150 passengers from various Gulf countries had landed at Mangaluru airport.

Already, throat swab samples of 1814 passengers, who had arrived in Mangaluru, have been tested and 239 people with international travel history have tested positive and the samples of 1,575 passengers have tested negative so far.
