Ailing tiger kills caretaker in Pilikula biological park

Mangalore, August 1: In a heart-wrenching incident, an animal caretaker at a Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park in Pilikula, on the outskirts of the city was fatally mauled by an ailing tiger on Tuesday night.

The caretaker, Kushalappa Gowda, 36, who suffered severe wounds during the attack, breathed his last while being taken to hospital.

This is first time that a caretaker has come under fatal attack by an animal at Pilikula.

H Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the park, told 'Coastaldigest.com' that the incident occurred at around 9:00 pm, when the caretaker entered the enclosure of tiger Raja to examine its health condition.

He said that 16-year-old Raja was unwell since last four days and Gowda and another caretaker were supposed to observe its health every night before going to bed and report to the doctor.

“However, on Tuesday night an overconfident Gowda entered the cell without informing anybody. When his colleague, who was supposed to accompany him, began to search for him, he found the gate of the tiger's enclosure open and the animal was standing on the verandah. An unconscious caretaker was lying inside the enclosure”, he said.

Though a critically injured Gowda was rushed to a hospital doctors declared him brought dead, he said, adding that the caretaker was bitten in the neck, and he had some abrasions.

Mr Bhandary also said that Gowda was not supposed to enter the enclosure alone. His overconfidence led to this tragedy, he added.

He said that apart from Rs 1 lakh of insurance amount, the victim's kin would get Rs 1 lakh compensation from the park. Moreover Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda also has promised to release additional compensation, he added.

Jan 21: Info Edge (India)'s shareholding in Zomato reduces to 22.71%; Uber receives 9.99% stake in Zomato.

Info Edge (India) announced that Zomato Media (Zomato) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Uber's food delivery business in India (Uber) in an all-stock transaction, which gives Uber 9.99% ownership in Zomato.

Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform, effective 21 January 2020.

Upon closing of said acquisition, the company's shareholding in Zomato shall stand reduced to about 22. 71 % on fully converted & diluted basis.

Bengaluru, Jan 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday arrived at the Yelahanka air base by a special plane on a two-day visit to Karnataka to attend events in Tumakuru and Bengaluru.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, Union Ministers D V Sadananda Gowda and Pralhad Joshi and state Revenue Minister R Ashoka were present to welcome Modi.

Yediyurappa greeted the Prime Minister by garlanding him and offering a shawl and adorned him with a Mysuru Peta (turban).

Later, Modi flew to Tumakuru to attend events at the Siddaganga Math apart from addressing a gathering and to present the Krishi Karman Award.

In the evening, the Prime Minister will visit the DRDO facility to dedicate five DRDO Young Scientists Laboratories to the nation.

He will stay at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday.

On Friday, Modi will inaugurate the 107th Indian Science Congress at the University of Agriculture Science in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: Veteran actor and comedian, Rajagopal, who was known for his outstanding mimicry skills in Sandalwood breathed his last on the night of July 1, that is yesterday. He was one of the favourite comedians among the audiences and is said to have been suffering from kidney and asthma problems.

He passed away at his residence in Bangalore.

The well-recognised comedian has worked in more than 600 movies in his career, along with Tamil movies. The actor was active in the film industry since 1983 and had acted with many stars like Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, Prabhakar among others. He is also known for mimicking actress Kalpana's voice very well.

Recently, he also had claimed that new directors, new producers in the Kannada film industry had not been calling veterans to play parts in their movies and preferring fresh talent. He also had been going through a financial crisis due to the lockdown. Rajagopal has also worked in TV serials for some time in his career.  He has acted in super hit movies like, ‘Real Police’, ‘Sadakaru’, ‘Goosi Gang’, ‘Super Police’, and others as well.

The lockdown has seen the demise of many South Indian stars. Chiranjeevi Sarja too passed away last month, leaving the industry in shock. Now, a famous comedian's demise has also saddened the industry further.
