Mangalroe, August 2: Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangalore MP, on Wednesday presented the prestigious Malpe Shankaranarayana Samaga Award to Balipa Narayana Bhagawatha in Mangalore.
Speaking on the occasion he said that artistes from Samaga family and Balipa family had devoted their life to Yakshagana.
President of the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy M.L. Samaga, speaking at the function, sought refinement in Yakshagana shows.
He said the refinement was needed to establish Yakshagana as a classical art form. He said that there was a need to adopt some discipline in performances to show that it was a classical art.
If artistes were to present a disciplined show audience should support traditional disciplined Yakshagana shows, he said.
Mr. M. L. Samaga said that late Samaga expected Yakshagana artistes to have good character and respected such artistes more.
Kalkura Foundation, which organised the function, hosted a traditional Yakshagana show on the occasion with “poorva ranga” performances.
