Homestay attack: Kalladka Bhat's arrest demanded at KKSV protest

Mangalore, August 4: The RSS top brass are the real perpetrators of the homestay attack and leaders such as Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and Jagadish Karanth must be arrested first, K L Ashok, Secretary, Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV) said.

He was speaking at a protest organized in Mangalore on Friday by KKSV, in collaboration with other likeminded organisations against the attack on young boys and girls at a homestay by Hindutva activists.

The police have registered cases against media persons in the incident. If they have guts, they must arrest Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and Jagadish Karanth who are the brains behind the attacks, Mr. Ashok said. Activists working for the Sangh Parivar must realise that they are being misused by their leaders. In times of arrest, the likes of Kalladka Bhat and Jagadish Karanth do not come to their rescue, he said. Kalladka Bhat has not been arrested by police yet, in spite of there being clear evidences of him spreading communal hatred, Mr. Ashok said.

On one hand, the Sangh Parivar opposes burqa and on the other complains of westernization. The saffron organisations have no right to dictate dress codes on Indians, he said. Taking a dig at Pejawar Shree and all others who criticized the dress code and girls' participation in the party, Mr. Ashok said that all such people are speaking the RSS language.

Gowri Lankesh, journalist, said that religion is not above constitution. Holding the RSS responsible for the attacks, she said that organisations such as the HJV, Bajarang Dal, VHP etc are all branches of RSS. The RSS has always been anti-women, she said. It has been responsible for creating tense atmospheres in the country whether it was the killing of Mahatma Gandhi, demolition of Babri Masjid, Gujarat riots or the blasts in various parts of the country including Mecca Masjid and Samjhauta Express blasts.

Jyoti Guruprasad, popular columnist, said that the attack on students at the homestay was an attack on humanity. Why didn't HJV raise its voice when Halappa, Renukacharya and Padmapriya cases came to the fore, she questioned.

Sabiha Bhoomigowda, progressive thinker, said that instead of addressing the key issue of the assault on students, many including State Women's Commission Chief C Manjula tried to divert the issue by discussing the legality of the homestay and so on.

B T Lalita Nayak, former minister, said that citizens enjoy freedom to live their lives and if they do something objectionable, there is law and order to deal with it. She demanded a ban on Hindu Jagarana Vedike on the occasion.

Members of several other organizations such as DK District Women's Forum, Diocese Council of Christian Women, Mangalore Citizen's Association, National Women's Front, Popular Front of India, Catholic Sabha, AHINDA, Karnataka Rajya Dalitha Sangharsha Samithi, PUCL, Karnataka Missions Netwrok, Mangalore Central Committee, National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations, among others participated.

Bengaluru, June 29: The Karnataka government on Monday issued guidelines to conduct online classes for all students of ICSE, CBSE and SSLC under the directions of the High Court.

According to the guidelines, for the kindergarten students, online classes can be held 30 minutes a week and students in classes 1-5 will have online classes for 30-45 minutes divided into two periods for three alternate days every week.

For students in classes 6-8, the online classes will be for 30-45 minutes divided into two periods for five days every week while students in classes 9 and 10 can have the virtual classes for 30-45 minutes divided into four periods for five days a week.

Earlier, the state government barred online classes for the kids from LKG to class 5.

Minister for primary and secondary education S Suresh Kumar had said that online classes cannot be held for the kids from LKG to class V.

Bhatkal, May 9: A day after 12 covid-19 positive cases reported from Bhatkal, seven more tested positive for the coronavirus in the town today. 

The new patients are: a six-month-old baby, a two-and-a half-year-old child, two girls aged 17 and 23, a 50-year-old woman and two elderly men aged 65 and 68 years.

The source of all these cases is said to be the First Neuro hospital located at Padil in Mangaluru where a covid-19 patient from Bantwal had undergone treatment a month ago. Around 20 days ago an 18-year-old girl from Bhatkal, who had been to the same hospital was tested positive for the covid-19. 

After the confirmation of 12 covid-19 positive cases yesterday, the throat swab of 60 people, who were in contact with them were sent for testing. Among them seven people – six relatives and a friend – were tested positive today.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: The Karnataka government would provide Rs 10,000 immediate relief to families affected by heavy rains and flooding in districts across coastal, central and southern areas of the state, an official said on Thursday.

"Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has directed all the Deputy Commissioners in the rain-cum-flood-hit districts to provide Rs 10,000 interim relief to the affected families and Rs 5 lakh to those whose houses were completely damaged in the natural disaster," a Revenue Department official told media persons here.

As the south-west monsoon advanced and intensified, heavy and widespread rains with gusty winds have been lashing 12 of the 30 districts across the state, wreaking havoc and disrupting normal life due to flooding, landslides, lakes and ponds overflowing, and rivers and their tributaries in the spate.

"The Chief Minister also instructed the officials to make use schools, colleges and public places as relief centres to shelter the rain-cum-flood-hit families, as hostels and community halls have been converted into Covid care centres in the affected districts," said the official.

The affected districts have also been advised to conduct a survey of crop loss suffered by farmers for compensation under the centrally-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and the Weather Based Crop Insurance Schemes.

Deputy Commissioners have been told to take preventive measures to protect and provide relief to the people from heavy rains, floods and landslides in the affected districts.

"Yediyurappa also directed ministers in-charge of the districts to remain in their constituency and visit the affected areas to assess damage caused by the rains and flash floods for compensation and relief aid," noted the official.

The Chief Minister on Wednesday announced Rs 50 crore for rescue and relief operations in the affected districts across the state.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological department has issued a red alert on heavy rains in the affected districts of Kodagu, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttar Kannada in the coastal region and in Shivamoga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Haveri in the Malnad region.

"Bagamandala in Kodagu district where Cauvery river springs near Talakaveri received a whopping 486 mm rain during the last 24 hours, causing flash floods and disrupting normal life as offices, shops and eateries remained shut and public transport was affected," added the official.

The water-level in Cauvery and Lakshmanatheertha is flowing at high level while the Sayi layout and Kuvempu layout Kushalnagar is inundated and the affected residents were shifted to safer location.
