Storm on the sea: Fisherman killed as boat capsizes off Bhatkal

stormKarwar: August 5: A fisherman last his life when his boat capsized as heavy winds blew across the Arabian Sea at Karikal village in Bhatkal taluk on Saturday.

The dead has been identified as Govind Kharvi (50) from Mavinakurve village near Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada.

High tides have made fishing boats that ventured into the sea from various ports in the district return to the shore.Hundreds of mechanised fishing boats from Goa, Kerala, Uttara Kannada and Udupi ports have anchored at Baithakola fishing port.

“High tides accompanied by heavy rains have made casting of nets impossible. We shall get into the waters once the tides recede,” said fisherman Keshava Mogera.

The coastal areas in the district have not received rains, but there were good rains in the ghats and the plains.

However, there has been no report of rain damage. Yellapura received 68.4 mm of rainfall and Joida received 124.6 mm, during the 24 hours that ended at 8 am on Saturday. There was 71 mm of rainfall in Sirsi, 88.4 mm in Siddapura, 39.4 mm in Huliyal and 30 mm of rainfall in Bhatkal.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: A college student was killed when a bullet tanker knocked his motorbike down near Nanthoor Circle in the city today. 

The deceased has been identified as Karthik Malya, a resident of Mannegudda. He was a final year degree student of Besant College in the city. 

The incident took place when Karthik was from Suratkal to Mangaluru. The bullet tanker reportedly hit the two-wheeler from behind and ran over him. He died on the spot.

Kasaragod, Mar 11: An accused in a POCSO case here has been put in an isolation ward at the Government hospital on Wednesday as he was suspected having symptoms of Covid19.

The accused has been absconding ever since a case under POCSO Act was registered against him a year ago.

However acting on a tip off, the Kasaragod police arrested him at Mangalore Airport recently and was produced before the Court and was remanded to judicial custody.

Udupi, Jul 22: Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh on Wednesday announced lifting of ban on movement of people and vehicles with immediate effect in the borders of Kerala which was banned during lockdown.

The announcement comes hours after Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced that lockdown in Bengaluru and other parts of the state will not be extended any further, suggesting people should wear masks and maintain physical distancing strictly.

Mr Jagadeesh noted that although the seal down of the borders of the district would be lifted, checkposts on the border would be set up and urged people to enter the district only in case of emergency.
