Prostitution racket busted; BJP leaders held

Mangalore, August 7: Busting a prostitution racket, police have nabbed six persons allegedly engaged in flesh trading at an apartment in the city on Monday evening.

Interestingly, all of the arrested including men and women are said to be local leaders and activists of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Two among the arrested identified as Sandeep Shetty (35) and Dooraiah (35), were active leaders of BJP in Uppinagady and Belthangay region. A black burkha-clad woman, aged around 30 years was also among the arrested. It is learnt that it was the same woman who tied a rakhi on then-chief minister B S Yeddyurappa's wrist during his visit to Mangalore a couple of years ago.

Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of Mangalore South Police raided an apartment 'Adarsh' at Subhash Nagar at around 6:00pm and found seven people –four women and three men- allegedly indulging in prostitution, police sources said.

One among them succeeded in fleeing from the spot while six other were arrested and mobile phones and a cash amount were seized from them, it said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 15: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan''s daughter Veena married top DYFI All India president Mohammed Riaz at the chief minister''s official residence in the presence of selected guests.

Riaz and Veena became husband and wife at a solemn function held under Covid protocols with not more than 50 people present.

This was the second marriage for both, as their first ones ended in divorce.

Riaz has two children, while Veena has a son from their respective previous marriages.

Riaz is a lawyer by profession and had contested the Kozhikode Lok Sabha seat in 2009 but lost to the Congress'' M.K.Raghavan.

Veena runs her own software company in Bengaluru.

While the marriage has already been registered recently, the wedding event was a closed door affair, with just very close relatives of the couple besides a few senior party colleagues of Vijayan.

Bengaluru, May 25: The 36-hour marathon lockdown call given by Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, passed off peacefully with people opting to remain inside their houses and cooperate with the state government to fight against spread of deadly Covid-19.

Though the call was only for 24 hours from 7 am (Sunday) to 7 am (Monday) another 12 hours was added to it as the night curfew was already in force from 7 pm on Saturday and the next day (Sunday) it continued till Monday up to 7 am.

Autorickshaws and bus service were off the road giving a tough time to people arriving from neighbouring places reach home that too during the night. Adding to their woes was heavy rain that lashed the city for more than two hours on Sunday evening flooding the streets.

Mangaluru, Jan 16: A protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register organised by the Muslim Central Committee of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts near Adiyar on Wednesday signalled a snowballing opposition to the measures.

Harsh Mander, former Indian Administrative Service officer-turned-social activist, asserted that the nation’s fight against 'fascist' forces including Bharatiya Janata Party and its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh began over 100 years ago when Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa and led the freedom movement against the British.

In his address, Mr Mander asserted that the fight against CAA and NRC is also a campaign to save the secular fabric of the nation. He added that the fight began over a century ago when Hindu Mahasabha and other organisations popped up with their vision to turn the nation into a Hindu country.4
