Save Earth' walkathon to trigger environmental awareness

Mangalore, August 8: The Mangalore branch of Trinity Communication Centre, London, will be organising a 'Save Earth Awareness Walkathon' in the city on August 12 at 8 a.m. from Kadri Park to the Mangala Stadium, Mangalore, said member of the branch Manjunath at a press conference held on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, another member Bina Gonsalves said that the aim of the walkathon was to create awareness among the citizens of Mangalore about the depleting environment. Keeping in mind the sparse amount of rainfall that the district has received, the theme of this walkathon is 'Save Our Earth'. All the proceeds will go towards the construction of a public toilet for women. It will be an electronic toilet, where the flush would be electronically controlled, she said.

There have been examples of such electronic toilets constructed in Kerala. This proposed one will be the first in the city, and will be constructed in a high usage area such a bus stand, she said.

“This is the second time we are conducting the walkathon. The one held last year had seen the participation of around 160 students. This year we have approached around 30- 40 schools, to gain as much participation as possible”, she said.

The organising committee would hold their Annual Parents' Day Awareness programme on August 11 at 5.30 p.m. at St. Agnes College Auditorium, Mangalore, to propagate their message, she added.

Mangaluru, Apr 17: Authorities in Dakshina Kannada have announced a fresh coronavirus positive case. The patient is a resident of Uppinangady in Puttur taluk.

With this the total number of covid-19 positive cases in this coastal district mounted to 13 even though most of the patients have recovered and returned home after treatment.

In past twelve days this is the first coronavirus case reported in the district.

It is learnt that the 39-year-old had been to Delhi. He was home quarantined for past few days. His throat swabs were tested positive for the deadly disease today.

Bengaluru, May 3: Karnataka Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Saturday said that those who want to travel from other states to Karnataka and vice-versa must register on 'Sevasindhu' website.

"Those who want to travel from other states to Karnataka and from Karnataka to other states must register on 'Sevasindhu' website, then all intimation will be shared from the government side," Kumar said.

Karnataka Health Department on Saturday said that three deaths and 12 new COVID-19 cases were reported in last 24 hours in the state.

According to the Health Department, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the state is now 601. 271 patients have either been cured or discharged. The virus has killed 25 people so far in the state.

Bengaluru, Apr 12: The Karnataka government is studying in-depth the consequences of the possible relaxation of lockdown norms after April 14 and plans to come out with a clear roadmap in a day or two, a key Minister said on Sunday.

Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar, who is in charge of all matters related to COVID-19, told PTI that the pros and cons of any decision that the Government intends to take is being looked at in detail.

"We are trying to understand how the situation would be of any action that we intend to take. We need to foresee the repercussions or results of our action. That we have to keep it in mind and make a decision. After-effects of the decisions we intend to take, that is more important, he said. You will have clarity (on the possible relaxation of lockdown norms) in a day or two. For everything (government decisions) we will give the reasoning for what action we would like to take; with the reasoning, we will give a decision," the Minister added.

Government sources said some relaxation in liquor sales, stopped during the lock-down period, is likely after the ongoing 21-day national clampdown ends on April 14. Twelve of the state's 30 districts remain free from the COVID-19 pandemic. Till Saturday, Karnataka reported 215 COVID-19 positive cases, including six deaths and 39 discharges.
