It's time for Knit India Movement'

Mangalore, August 9: The Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation observed 'Quit India Day' on Thursday at Tagore Park, in the city to mark 70th anniversary of Quit India Movement.

Delivering the inaugural speech at the programme, Commissioner of Mangalore Urban Development Authority Ajith Kumar Hegde S. said that Quit India Movement was one of the milestones in the history of Indian freedom struggle.

“After the Cripps' Mission was sent to India by the British, Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders of Indian National Congress decided to call for a mass protest demanding an orderly British withdrawal from the country. A 'Quit India' resolution was passed on August 7, 1942, and Gandhi gave a call for 'Do or Die'. Thus, the Quit India Movement was born and the Indian tricolour was hoisting for the first time on August 9, 1942. Although the movement was not successful, Gandhi's call found support among a large amount of Indians,” he said.

Comparing the past situation to the present one, he said that one of the most important reasons why the British were opposed was the large amount of wealth transported to England. “A similar situation can be seen now where a particular group wants to bring back the money deposited in Swiss banks by Indians. After 65 years of independence, we see ambiguity in our freedom. While on one side the country has advanced in various fields, on the other side freedom has not reached the people at the grassroots,” he said.

Corporator of Mangalore City Corporation Ranganath C. Kini said that there was a need to unify people with a 'Knit India' Movement in the present day. He also said that students coming to Mangalore from other places should be brought together on the same platform.

In his presidential address, President of Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation (MGPF) A. Sadananda Shetty said that in this competitive world, students should shape the future by rendering service to the society.

He said that while the country had reached international levels in various fields like technology, education, agriculture and medicine, incidents like the recent home-stay attack in the city caused hindrance to the country's progress. Not the police, but the politicians are to be blamed for such incidents, he said.

Ajith Kumar Hegde hoisted the Indian flag at the park while students from various schools looked on. MGPF Secretary Dr. N. Ismail welcomed the gathering, while Joint Secretary B. Prabhakar Shriyan proposed a vote of thanks. MGPF Treasurer P. Sadananda was present on the occasion.

Patriotic singing and elocution competitions were held for students from schools across the city. Students from as many as 25 schools took part.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: Bengaluru Police on Friday said that it has busted a gang engaged in e-commerce fraud over the online marketplace who were involved in 200 of the 316 cheating cases registered last year.

"We registered 316 cases for cheating through online marketplaces last year. We have busted a gang operating from Rajasthan's Bharatpur and arrested 5 people. They are responsible for 200 out of 316 cases. We are questioning the accused," Bhaskar Rao, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru told reporters here.

Explaining their modus operandi, the Police Commissioner said, "There were fictitious buyers and sellers on the online marketplace. These people used to call up prospective buyers and sellers. The products that were shown were two-wheelers, four-wheelers, electronic items and furniture."

"People used to send their money to these fraudsters using their QR code. The fraudsters were operating from Bharatpur in Rajasthan. A police team of 15 was sent to the place from where they were operating. Rajasthan police gave us full cooperation and we were able to arrest five persons," he added.

Rao said that these fraudsters had an idea about the loopholes in the e-commerce sector and exploited them.
"Some of those arrested were employed in the e-commerce and banking business and they had an idea about the loopholes in this sector," he said.

"We warn the citizens to ensure that they verify the antecedents of the buyers and sellers in this sector before spending money on these platforms," he added.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.

Bengaluru, May 5: A 62-year-old woman from Vijayapura succumbed to coronavirus infection on Tuesday, taking the COVID-19 death toll in Karnataka to 28, a health official said.

The state has registered eight more COVID-19 cases in the past 19 hours, increasing the count of such cases to 659, the official added.

"Positive case 640, 62-year-old female resident of Vijayapura died on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest," the health official said.

Admitted to a designated hospital''s ICU on Sunday, the woman was also suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Bronchial Asthma (BA) and complained of breathlessness.

Among the eight fresh cases that emerged in the state, four were contacts of earlier cases, two with Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and one with travel history to Uttarakhand.

The health department is also tracing the contact history of a 30-year-old woman from Bengaluru Urban.

Incidentally, no new cases emerged from Davangere as 22 cases rocked the district on Monday.

Among the new cases, Bengaluru Urban contributed 3, followed by Bagalkote, 2, Ballari, Dakshina Kannada and Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada, 1 each.

Of the new cases, six are men and two women.
