Mangalore, August 10: The Government Lady Goschen hospital in the city will get a modern building at a cost of Rs. 21 crore to be funded by ONGC-MRPL.

Deputy Speaker in the Legislative Assembly and Mangalore City South MLA N. Yogish Bhat said here that the new building for the Lady Goschen Hospital would have basement, ground and four floors totally measuring about 1.50 lakh square feet. The hospital, which has a history of over160 years, is functioning from a dilapidated building, Mr. Bhat said.

Hospital sources said on Thursday that it leaked during rains and maintaining crucial equipment, lab and operation theatres was difficult.

Mr. Bhat said a meeting was held in the office of Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda recently to discuss various aspects of calling the tender for the construction of a new building. Besides Mr. Bhat, it was attended by commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Harish Kumar, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) Managing Director P.P. Upadyay, other officials and architect Premananda Shenoy and hospital's superintendent Shakunthala.

The project was being taken up under the Corporate Social Responsibility activity of the ONGC-MRPL, the release said.

Dr. Shakunthala said that the new building would have Out-Patient Department (OPD), four operation theatres, labour theatre, laboratory, blood bank, canteen, x-ray plant, special wards, attenders' rooms and the administrative block with a separate chamber for the superintendent. The basement would be used for parking.

The artist's impression of the front elevation of the new building, sent to media by Mr. Bhat, has been provided by Mr. Shenoy. Sources said the construction of the modern hospital could begin next month.

Mr. Bhat said the MRPL had come forward to provide a burns centre for the Government Wenlock Hospital.

Mangaluru, Feb 27: An utterly unprofessional thief, who fell asleep after breaking into a house, was caught by the house owner and handed over to the police in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada.

The hilarious incident took place on Wednesday in the one-storey, tiled-roof house owned by Sudarshan at Ullas Junction under the limits of Uppinangady police station.

The thief, who gained entry into the house by removing the roof-tiles, has been identified as Anil Sahani, a native of Bihar’s Majipur district. He was snoring on the sofa with a set of keys clutched in his hand when the house owner woke up in the morning.

The house owner, who was sure that the thief was drunk, woke him up by hitting him with a stick and then handed him over to the police.

According to police, the thief was tired after removing the tiles on Tuesday night and hence he decided to take a nap soon after entering the house.

He grabbed a bunch of keys kept near the TV stand and then lied down on the sofa. He woke up only when the house owner hit him with a stick the next morning.
