Get blood tested whenever fever occurs to avoid malaria'

Mangalore, August 10: People must not neglect fever and resort to mere tablets but get their blood tested to avoid suffering from malaria, said Dr. C M Sudarshan, Health Officer, Mangalore City Corporation.

He was speaking at a malaria and dengue awareness programme organized by MCC and DK Hotels and Restaurants Association in Mangalore on Friday.

Warning the public that no fever should be taken lightly, Dr.Sudarshan said that people should make use of the free blood testing centres available at seven different places in the city including the government Wenlock Hospital and KSRTC bus stand. Blood test must be conducted when fever is at its peak and not according to the convenience of the patient, he said. The blood testing centres in the city provide results the same day, he said, adding that in case malaria is tested positive, immediate treatment should be sought.

Stating that free malaria treatment is provided in government health centres, Dr. Sudarshan said that people must not abort the treatment midway at any cost. The fever may show signs of subsiding but the body continues to be affected by malaria from within, he said, warning that in such circumstances, the disease reappears within 14 days.

Prevention is the best way to tackle malaria, he said. In every house there are mosquito breeding sources such as flower pots, water storage below refrigerators, terraces, courtyards, water tanks and so on. Such stored water must be given special attention to see that mosquitoes are not bred, he said.

Mayor Gulzar Banu, in her address said that builders must give special attention to water storage at construction sites to check the growth of malaria.

Deputy Mayor Amita Kala also spoke. Mosquito nets were distributed among hotel workers on the occasion.

Marriages will have to shed decadence as the state government, in an advisory, has restricted the number of guests to 50 and barred consumption of liquor at such events. 

The advisory was issued in anticipation that the COVID-19 lockdown will be eased in a phased manner. 

The advisory, issued by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, states that events can be held in a “suitable public place with good natural ventilation (no air condition).”

All guests must have the Arogya Setu app on their phones and the contact details all marriage attendees should be maintained. 

No person from a containment zone will be allowed to attend the event, and persons aged above 65 years, pregnant women and children below 10 years are not permitted. 

Sanitizers are to be provided at the entry and at “appropriate” places. Thermal screening is a must at the entry point of the venue. The scanner should be held 3-15 cm away from a person’s forehead. “Anyone found having a fever (37.5 degree centigrade or 99.5 farenheit), cold, cough, difficulty in breathing shall not be permitted to attend the event and immediately referred to seek medical advice,” the advisory said. 

Besides prohibition on consumption of alcohol, the advisory said paan, gutka and tobacco will not be allowed. 

Face masks are compulsory and all persons should maintain a physical distance of more than one metre. The venue shall be clean and hygienic, with a prohibition on spitting in public places.

A nodal person should be identified to oversee the arrangements, the advisory said.

Madikeri, Aug 6: Heavy rainfall triggered landslides at Brahmagiri hills in Talacauvery in Kodagu on Thursday.

Four members of the Talacauvery temple priest family are missing in the landslides informed Annies Kanmani Joy, Kodagu DC.

She also informed that Advanced Rescue Team has been rushed to incident site.

According to the reports, houses belonging to two priest families were destroyed in the incident. 

However, one house was vacant as family had moved to Bhagamandala.

Visuals from Kodagu showed a flood-like situation, with houses and vehicles submerged under rainwater.

Meanwhile, heavy rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts on Thursday.

Mangaluru, Feb 6: In a case of suspected political rivalry, a 28-year-old BJP activist was brutally assaulted by a gang at Munchoor here, police said on Thursday.

Police said that the injured identified as Yashodhar is undergoing treatment at Padmavathi Hospital here.

Four people namely – Diwakar, Dinesh Shetty, Ashwith Kulal and Yashodhara Agaramelu – assaulted Yashodhar and posed him with a death threat. It was reported that the gang had been keeping an eye on Yashodhar’s movements for some time now.
