Police too slapped girls: Homestay victims

Mangalore, August 11: Two of the victims who were targeted by activists belonging to Hindu Jagrana Vedike while celebrating a birthday at Morning Mist homestay in Padil, spoke at a press conference held here on Saturday.

The victims, Vijay and Gurudath, recounting the brutal assault made on the group of youngsters, alleged that the local police was involved in the attack. They stated that the police were hand-in glove with the assaulters.

“According to our friends Avron and Dylan, who were present outside the building at the time of the attack, four police officers and a driver were present outside in a jeep. They (the police) saw the Vedike activists enter the place and yet did not take action. They themselves entered the homestay at least 20 minutes after the attack began,” said Vijay. They also alleged that a couple of girls who were present had been slapped by the police officers.

“We did not know the background of the homestay or whether it had a valid license. It was suggested to us by one of our friends. Vijay and Vandana had pooled in 2,500 each to rent out the place,” they said. The people who assaulted us were in an inebriated state, they added.

Rubbishing the rumour that one of the victims had left the state to avoid media scrutiny, they said that all the victims were still present in Mangalore and no one had left the town. Vijay said that he was in contact with three of the girls who had been assaulted and they would soon come forward to file an FIR on the incident.

Vijay and Gurudath appealed that CBI or a Special Investigation Panel take up inquiry of the case in an unbiased manner and ensure that justice was delivered to them.

Bengaluru, Jul 21: Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah on Monday attacked the ruling government and said press conference of Health Minister B Siramulu was more like an exercise to hide facts than presenting proof with accurate data.

"Got to know about the press conference addressed by B Siramulu and Dr Ashwathnarayan CN to clear accusations of corruption. It looked more like an exercise to hide facts than presenting proof with accurate data," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

"It is still unclear about the points presented in the press conference. They have not answered any of my questions which were raised earlier. I will respond in detail once I receive the written explanation from the govt. Minister has claimed that both Health & Medical education department together have spent Rs323 Cr. But the data presented by them does not even add up to Rs100 Cr. What happened to the rest of the money?," asked Siddaramaiah.

He said that Centre has procured ventilators at Rs4 lakh per unit under PM Cares. But only in our state, the ventilators are procured at Rs12-Rs18 lakh per unit

"Prime Minister's Office has procured ventilators at Rs4 lakh per unit under PM Cares. But only in our state, the ventilators are procured at Rs12-Rs18 lakh per unit. Why do we see such a huge difference in price? Ministers, in the press conference, have told that quality & technological capabilities are the reasons for huge price difference. Does it mean ventilators under PM Cares lack quality? Why did they not present the technical specifications to justify the same?" he asked.

"Not just about the procurement of medical equipment, I had even asked data about food kits, PDS distribution, beds procured, quarantine centres & isolation wards. Where is the data for that?" he asked in a series of tweets.

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit. 

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies. 

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry. 

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.

Mangaluru, Jan 13: Supporting former state chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy who released a "CD on the December 19 Mangaluru violence", Dakshina Kannada party unit president Mohammed Kunhi on Monday demanded a probe into the violence.

Mr Kumaraswamy, who released 35 video clips related to the violence, had demanded the suspension of the Police Commissioner and also sought a house committee to probe the incident.

Addressing media personnel here, Kunhi questioned, "If the police department did not commit any mistake why is the state government looking worried about the CDs released by Kumaraswamy?"
