13 retired physical education teachers felicitated

Mangalore, August 12: As many as 13 retired physical education teachers from the district were felicitated by the Dakshina Kannada Physical Education Teachers' Association on Saturday at the building of Karnataka State Government Employees here.

Among those who were felicitated included Prasanna Kumar Jain, Diwakar Hegde, Margaret D'Souza, K. Tukaram Rai, Sunder Shetty, Prabhavati K, Gopal Shetty, M. Jangannath Shetty, Narasimhaiah, Vijayendra Kokkade, M. Ibrahim, Girija A and veteran sportsperson Hilda Vegas.

Speaking on the occasion, the association's president P.V. Joseph said despite contributing immensely in developing national and international-level athletes the condition of the physical education teachers still continued to be bad. “We are denied of statutory service benefits,” he said. The physical education teachers are still considered special teachers and have not yet been given the grade of assistant teachers.

Following relentless fight by the association for the last four years the State Government has now come forward to make changes in the cadre and recruitment rules, he said. “We hope to get orders changing our grade in a fortnight.” Mr. Joseph sought financial aid from legislators in addressing the problems of the physical education teachers.

The association, on the occasion, also opened its new office in the new Karnataka State Government Employees' building.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Santhosh Kumar Padil, ASI attached to Mangaluru East (Kadri) Police Station, has helped two children unite with their parents in Kerala.

The children had come to Mangaluru during the holidays and could not return to their native place following the closure of border and lockdown. The two children, hailing from Manjeshwara in Kasargod district, were in the house of their relatives in Mangaladevi and were eager to join their parents.

The relatives of the children had brought the issue to the notice of the ASI and sought his help in the matter.

Bengaluru, Jul 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has asked officials to ensure that all necessary arrangements for COVID-19 patients must be carried out efficiently and transparently, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said.

"Karnataka is in a better position due to the efforts and hard work of ministers, doctors, officials and all staff. The cases have increased in Bengaluru and some other districts in last few days due to various reasons. We all have to work hard and contain the spread of virus," Dr Sudhakar told media on Saturday.

"Responsibilities related to policy formulation, preparation of guidelines, communication to media and management of war room have been assigned to me. Deputy Chief Minister Ashwath Narayan has been given the responsibility of managing COVID-19 care centres and Revenue Minister R Ashoka and Chief Minister's political secretary Vishvanath have been given the responsibility of managing private hospitals. The Chief Minister has instructed all of us to work in synergy," he said.

Dr Sudhakar said the matter of imposing lockdown in the state again was discussed in the task force meeting. "I and Deputy Chief Minister suggested that lockdown is not necessary at this stage. The Chief Minister will take a decision on this matter," he added.

Home Minister Basavar Bommai, Health Minister B Sriramulu, Revenue Minister R Ashoka and senior officials were present in the task force meeting.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the murder case of journalist-activist Gauri, arrested absconding suspect Rushikesh Devdikar alias Murali (44) from Dhanbad district in Jharkhand on Thursday evening and is bringing him to the city.

Rushikesh is the 18th suspect arrested in the case, Chief Investigating Officer M N Anucheth said. The investigation has revealed that he was primarily involved in the conspiracy to murder Gauri.

Rushikesh, who was hiding in a house in Katras, Dhanbad, will be produced before the local Judicial Magistrate in Dhanbad on Friday, said Anucheth, adding that the SIT had searched his house for clues. "We will obtain a transit warrant from the court and then bring him to Bengaluru," the officer said.

Originally from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Rushikesh's family still lives there.

Gauri Lankesh was shot dead near her residence at around 8.20 pm on September 5, 2017, by two bike-borne men.
