Mangalore, August 12: Besides ensuring that children get good education, it is the responsibility of parents to make sure that they grow up with cultural values, said Umanath Kotian, President, Tulu Sahitya Academy.
He was speaking after inaugurating 'Mariyalada Minadana', folk dance competition for college students organized jointly by the Academy and Sri Narayanaguru Yuvavedike at Town Hall in Mangalore on Sunday.
Parents today have a misconception that providing education to their children and enabling them get high salary jobs is enough to ensure they lead a peaceful life in their later years. Making sure they imbibe cultural values is equally important. Many parents have realized their folly today as their children hardly care for them although they made all sacrifices to educate them, Mr. Kotian said.
The programme is an attempt to create awareness about the importance of culture and values in the present generation, he said.
22 colleges have resigetered in the inter college folk dance competition.
Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MP, and Dr. Vijaykumar, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, were also present.
