Kasargod, August 13: Heavy rains, which has been lashing Kasargod district for last few days, has inundated many low-lying areas, houses and paddy fields, disrupting normal life.

While a house at Adur village here was severely damaged, a number of roads in the district, including those in the busy Kasaragod-Mangalore stretch, have become virtually unmotorable at several places.

The house of Krishna Naik, a resident of Padi in Adur village, suffered heavy damage with the loss estimated at around Rs.50,000.

The busy 50-km stretch to Mangalore has developed huge potholes. The busy road was reconstructed last year when deep potholes were found near the Talipadappu locality on National Highway No. 17.

Owing to inadequate drainage, rainwater flows onto the road, making matters worse. The NH was reconstructed last year using macadam tarring technology on a five-year guarantee.

The monsoon-inflicted damage is attributed to low-quality maintenance.

A portion of the Arikadi fort near Kumbla caved in due to the rain, sources said.

Meanwhile, the district recorded 101.80 mm rain during the the 24 hours up to 9.30 a.m. on Sunday, official sources here said.

The rain abated during the day on Sunday, giving the much-needed respite to the public.
