Mangalore, August 13: Chairperson of State Women's Commission C. Manjula has to take back her report on homestay attack and resign immediately, said President of the State unit of Mahila Congress Manjula Naidu at a press conference held on August 13 at the District Congress Office.

Terming the report as “disgraceful”, she said that it lacked transparency and therefore had to be taken back. The report submitted by her finds fault with the students themselves who were the victims in the attack. It questions the background of the parents of the victims, without proof. This shows that Manjula has bowed down to the pressure of her political masters. The question arises whether or not she is a basically a woman, Ms. Naidu said.

Demanding an apology from Ms. Manjula, she said that she would burn the report.

She said that the outfits such as Sri Ram Sene, Hindu Jagrana Vedike, RSS and Sangh Parivar were all operating under the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP has been protecting these groups which commit atrocities on women in the name of culture. This is not protecting culture, but an attempt to promote 'Goondagiri'. Steps have to be taken by the police and such groups have to be banned, she said.

She also raised questions on the double standards of Sri Ram Sene Chief Pramod Muthalik and Hindu Jagrana Vedike Chief Jagadish Karanth.

The ones who assaulted the young students at the homestay were drunk rowdies who need to be given harsh punishment. Strict action must be taken against them under the 'Goonda Act'. Jagadish Karanth has to apologize to the women, she said. If left unchecked, this kind of moral policing will spread like a cancer, she added.

She appealed for students to fight for their rights. “The fundamental rights of the students have been attacked. We are with them in their fight,” she said.

She also said that she had spoken to Chairperson of National Women's Commission Mamatha Sharma and a member of the Commission Seema would soon arrive to take up further investigation on the matter.

Kalaburgi, May 27: Karnataka's Kalaburgi district recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as per information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In light of the increasing mercury levels, people here were seen consuming sugarcane juice and cold drinks to beat the heat. Animals and birds could also be seen searching for water for relief from the scorching sun.

Locals of the area requested the district administration to take necessary actions such as spraying water on roads, in order to bring down the temperatures.

"We are facing huge heat waves in this district from the past two days, and even the temperature is around 44 to 45 degrees on a daily basis. So, it is a very alarming situation in Kalaburgi. When we move around the city, we are unable to find water and fresh fruit juice, and even if fresh juice is available, we are afraid of getting infected by COVID-19," said one local.

"If we carry cold water, it gets warm within half an hour, and gets unfit for drinking, and it is tough for us. I request the district administration to look into this matter and do the needful such as spraying water on the roads, etc. for slightest relief," he added.
