M'lore: I-Day celebrated in city; Minister Ravi stresses on development in message

Mangalore, August 15: The Independence Day celebration programme under the auspices of district administration was held at Nehru Maidan in the city on Wednesday.


C T Ravi, district in charge minister for Dakshina Kannada, hoisted the national flag.


In his Independence Day message to the people of the district, Mr. Ravi recalled the contributions of the people who fought for the freedom of the country with a special mention of freedom fighters from the district such as Rani Abbakka, Karnad Sadashiva Rao, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya and Barister Attavara Yellappa.


Development of a state is measured in terms of development of basic facilities and infrastructure, Mr.Ravi said, giving a list of works undertaken by the BJP led state government in its four year tenure. Besides giving loans to fishermen at lower interest rates, aid to farmers under Suvarna Bhoomi Project, setting up of 50 new fish markets in the state, free bicycles for schoolchildren, setting up of Karnataka Maritime Board, and other services, the state government has also introduced the 'Sakaala' service to address people's woes in time, he said. The government aims at making Karnataka the numero uno state in the country, the minister said.


Many more projects for the development of the district are in the pipeline including 3D Planetarium at Pilikula, Hanging bridge between Sultan Battery and Tannirbavi, synthetic track at Mangala Stadium, construction of Ranga Mandira, construction of Guest House at Kukke Subramanya temple, construction of mini Vidhana Soudha at Sullia, besides other projects Mr. Ravi said. Under the Chief Minister's Special Grants Programme, Rs. 96 crore has been released, from which 217 of 265 works have been completed, he said. The state government has kept its word of abolishing Moolageni system in Udupi by enacting laws for the purpose, the minister added.


Mr. Ravi was given a guard of honour by police, NCC cadets and other battalions on the occasion. The first prize for march past was bagged jointly by the NCC Air Wing (junior) team led by Charan Raj and Road Safety Patrol (boys) team led by Santosh U Shet. The second prize was won by NCC Navy (junior) team led by Salman. Other achievers were also felicitated on the occasion.


Karkala's Ratnakar Naik of Indian Aeromodeling Society operated a mini helicopter to pay floral tributes to the national flag on the occasion. The spectacular display of helicopter operation caught public attention on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Thursday suggested that the cost of building and installing a new statue of Nada Prabhu Kempegowda in the Bengaluru airport should be borne by Kempegowda international airport (KIAL).

Shivakumar wrote to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and welcomed the decision of erecting a statute of Bengaluru founder Kempegowda at KIAL but he also suggested that the chief minister should not spend state government's money on this.

He said that the Karnataka government has done many favours to airport authority earlier.

Dr Soofi Anwar, Director Academics of University of Stirling RAK, UAE Campus, has achieved the prestigious professional recognition of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) UK. He has achieved this milestone through the Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE), the Continuing Professional Development Framework (CPD) for learning and teaching at University of Stirling, Scotland, UK. 

He was recognized for this achievement on recently concluded virtual Learning & Teaching Conference-2020 organized by University of Stirling Campus in UK.  He has secured his Ph.D. in Management from University of Azteca, Mexico.

Dr. Soofi Anwar has over 20 years of experience in teaching and academic leadership at higher education level and has worked in leading universities in UAE, Bahrain and India. He was conferred the prestigious Middle East Education Leadership Award, as the Best Professor in Management-2018 in recognition of his academic excellence, exemplary leadership in higher education. Prior to his current role, he has worked on leadership position in Birla Institute of Technology Offshore Campus RAK.

He has completed his MBA from Dept. of Business Administration, Mangalore University in 1999 and his B. Com degree from Canara College Mangaluru.

He has published numerous research papers in management and in the area of teaching and learning in higher education in reputed academic journals and international conferences proceedings. He is a member of editorial board of two leading management journals and engaged in reviewing faculty research publications in the area of management and marketing. 

He is a son of Haji Abdul Khadar Kodijal and Mrs. Mariyamma from Konaje, Mangaluru.

Shivamogga, Jun 13: Senior BJP leader and Karnataka Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, K S Eshwarappa on Saturday opined that during the selection of candidates to the legislative council, the party needs to take into consideration those who helped the party in formation of government in the State.

Speaking to media persons on the sideline of a programme here, he said the party high command would give another surprise while issuing tickets during the MLC election.

Mr Eshwrappa said that party high command will take a call on selecting candidates, but priority should be given to the leader who won on Congress and Janata Dal and then jumped to BJP which helped to form govt under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa.
