Tributes paid to Belthangady army martyr at M'lore Airport

Mangalore, August 15: When the whole country is celebrating the 66th Independence Day on Wednesday, the family of Krishnappa Gowda, the soldier from Belthangady who was found dead at the border in Punjab, mourned his untimely death.

His body was brought from Punjab to Mangalore in a passenger flight today in a wooden crate. His younger brother Prakash, uncle Shyam Sundar and several relatives had come to receive his body at the Mangalore Airport. It has been learnt that he died in the crossfire that took place between India and Pakistan at Firozpur Zone near Indo-Pak border in Punjab on Sunday night.

At the airport, Dakshina Kannada District-in-charge minister C.T. Ravi, Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, MLC Monappa Bhandary, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. K.N. Vijayprakash, Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Harish Kumar, Dakshina Kannada SP Abhishek Goyal paid homage to the dead Army officer.

29 year old Krishnappa was a non-commisioned officer in the Indian Army, who had gotten married exactly two months prior to his death, and had left home a month ago. He had been in the Army for 12 years and had been promoted to the post of a non-commissioned officer recently. His wife Latha is a lecturer at S.K.F. Industrial Centre at Moodbidri.

The deceased officer was a resident of Manjotty at Nada village in Belthangady taluk. He had two sisters and two younger brothers. His family received the news of his death on Monday.

So far, we have not heard from the district-in-charge, district officer or the Tahsildar. Only a couple of people like Pratap Simha Nayak (BJP leader) came up to us, said Mr. Shyam Sundar.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: With 12 fresh cases of the COVID-19 infection, including one woman, the total number of novel coronavirus cases in Karnataka surged to 371 on Saturday.

The sources said that as many as three new positive cases were reported from Mysuru district, followed by two each from Kalaburagi, Bhagalkote, one each case from Vijayapura, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag and Mandya, districts on Saturday.

Mangalore, Jan 21: Former city councillor and social activists Naveenchandra and social activist Vidya Dinker have been invited to participate in two-day National Level Consultation on Urban Governance which will take place on January 22 and 23 at Juniper Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Urban governance stakeholders of 20 states and one union territory will be participating in this national level consultative seminar. The participants will include elected representatives, NGO representatives and urban planning experts. The seminar is being organised by Mumbai based Prajna Foundation, which has undertaken an in-depth study of the governance of the 20 states and one union territories.

Having served several terms as a corporator of Mangaluru City Corporation, Naveenchandra is knowledgeable in matters relating to urban governance. He is very popular in his constituency. Vidya Dinker is a well known city based social activist. She is the Coordinator, Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development.

Vidya Dinker I can understand but Naveen i don't know on what qualifications and credentials he has been selected and to say he is Popular in his constituency is a Misnormer .  Just visit kambla ward once and speak to people and you can understand it better !!!

Mangaluru, Jul 1: Sudarshan Moodbidri, president of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party escaped unhurt after the car in which he was travelling met with an accident today on the outskirts of the city. 

The car’s front portion was completely damaged in the accident. It is not yet known who was driving the car. Sources said that Sudarshan did not suffer any injury. 

The mishap occurred when the driver lost control while trying to avoid hitting a pedestrian at Mijar near Moodbidri. The car collided with an oncoming vehicle before it veered off the road and entered the roadside sludge.

Sleuths from Moodbidri station police visited the spot as part of investigation.
