Homestay attack: 'Why talk about Kasab when we have terrorists in our own city?'

Mangalore, August 15: Referring to the culprits of the infamous homestay attack where young boys and girls were manhandled by Hindutva activists as 'terrorists', Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, Mumbai based businessman and Chief Coordinator, Jaago Mangalore Association, said that Mangaloreans have to first deal with elements like them rather than talking about the likes of Ajmal Kasab.


Addressing mediapersons at a press meet in Mangalore on Wednesday to brief about the scheduled protest against the attacks under the banner of Jaago Mangalore Association from Thursday, Mr. Shetty said that people of Mangalore must not let a handful of people tarnish the name and image of Mangalore.


Coming down heavily on C Manjula, State Women's Commission Chief, for pointing fingers at the victims, Mr. Shetty said that the move raises doubts about the future course of the case. The state government has taken the liberty to allow repeat of such attacks in the region owing to the silence of the people, Mr. Shetty said that constant protests from citizens alone can force the government to spring into action.


The protest campaign will begin on Thursday with a road show in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office at 5 pm where candles will be lit and a video presentation would be made. Similar road shows will be held at various junctions everyday for five days followed by a protest march on August 21 from Jyoti Circle to Nehru Maidan, where eminent personalities will address the gathering, Mr. Shetty said.


Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, advocate and activist, will inaugurate the campaign.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: A 10-month-old baby who tested COVID-19 positive on March 27 completed treatment and discharged from hospital on Saturday.

He was the youngest positive case in Karnataka, from Sajipanadu village in Bantwal taluk.

The child had been with his mother to a relative's house at Monetepadau village, situated on the Karnataka-Kerala border in the first week of March.

A few days later the child developed an acute respiratory illness and tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Treating the breastfeeding child was challenging for doctors as he had to be isolated. A team of doctors from Wenlock Hospital took up this challenge and successfully cured the baby.

Test reports on his mother and grandmother too have returned negative. They too had been under quarantine and were discharged with the baby.

Another positive development was that no COVID-19 case has been reported from the child's village.  

The entire Sajipanadu village was completely sealed after the child tested positive and the district had provided all the necessary supplies to the villagers.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: Techies living in a Whitefield apartment block where the city's first Coronavirus patient was residing have been asked to work from home.

The Karnataka government is in touch with the heads of IT and ITES companies, some of which are said to have asked their staff to work from home.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr C Ashwath Narayan, who also holds the IT and BT Portfolio, said the government had directed the companies to explore giving their employees the work-from-home option.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Former Prime Minister and JDS supremo H D Devegowda on Thursday gave a clarion call to party workers to take steps to strengthen the party from the grossroots level and to 'expose the failures' and 'anti-people' policies of BJP government both at the Centre and State.

In an open letter to the workers here, he alleged that the urgent need is to create awareness among the people about failure of the governments which have brought in policies which are deterrent to the poor and downtrodden.

BJP government headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in Karnataka has come up with an amendment to the Land Reforms Act,1961, which is 'against' interests of the small and medium farmers as even a non-agriculturist can purchase agriculture land, thus giving an opportunity to the rich people to 'exploit' illiterate farmers and purchase their land and use it for some other purpose after some time.
