Helpline service for the benefit of homeless launched

Mangalore, August 16: A helpline service for the homeless was launched at the Centre for Homeless near Saharavu Temple in Mangalore on Thursday under the auspices of Mangalore City Corporation.

Mayor Gulzar Banu inaugurated the service.

Dr. Harish Kumar, Commissioner, MCC, said that the helpline service is meant for people who come to Mangalore in search of livelihood but spend their days without any roof to protect them, besides catering to the needs of beggars and homeless.

The helpline number is 18004258515.

Dr. Kumar also said that the developments have come about as per the Supreme Court directive.

Besides Hampankatta, a centre for the homeless also exists at Urwa. Another such centre is slated to come up at Kasba Bengre, the Commissioner said.

Bengaluru, May 10: Amid the coronavirus lockdown, two police inspectors were suspended for their alleged involvement in the illegal sale of cigarettes.

"Two police inspectors suspended after an enquiry found their involvement in illegal sale of cigarettes during the lockdown in Bengaluru," informed Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil while speaking to news agency.

More details in this regard are awaited.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: Private unaided schools in the state that were demanding fees from parents in the name of online classes and taking online admissions will face action under Section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897, the Karnataka government said.

The Department of Public Instructions has warned school management of action against such educational institutes if they violate the rules. Following complaints from several parents and also from private school management associations, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar discussed the issue with officials from the department during a recent meeting and directed them to initiate action against such academies.

In a guideline issued on Saturday, the department said, "Schools can conduct online classes. But are not permitted to collect the fee from parents until further orders from the department."

Bengaluru, Jul 31: An ambulance driver was thrashed by the family members of a 75-year-old COVID-19 patient who passed away on his way to the hospital in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The incident happened after the patient died in the ambulance while waiting in front of the MS Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru.

The driver was dragged out of the ambulance and chased around by a relative.

His clothes were ripped off and harangue were hurled at him. The relative was seen shouting and blaming the driver for the patient's death.

Speaking to news agency, the driver said that he was unable to explain the sequence of the protocol which was to be followed while getting the patient to the treatment ward.

Karnataka is one of the worst-affected states by the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the state has 67,456 active cases as of Friday.

The state government has been struggling to contain the spread of the disease as it has intermittently imposed and eased lockdown measures, especially in the capital Bengaluru.
