Thousands throng mosques for last Ramadan Friday

Mangalore, August 17: On the last Friday of the holy month of Ramdan all the city mosques were overflowing as Muslims congregate in huge numbers to offer Juma prayer in the afternoon.

A good turnout of people gathered at Thaqwa Masjid Pumpwell, Kendra Juma Masjid Bunder, Eidgah Masjid Lighthill and Noor Masjid near Milagres here.

Heads bowed in obeisance and palms cupped in supplication, they prayed to the Almighty with sheer devout and determination.

According to M B Abdurrahman, one of the Joint Secretaries of Noor Masjid which is located at the heart of the City, more than 3,000 people offered Jum'a prayers. He said Imam Azeez Moulavi has elaborately spoken on the benefits of Ramadan and Thowheed in his Jum'a Khuthba (sermon). Azeez Moulavi also delivered sermons everyday in the Ramadan after the Zuhr Namaz, he said.

He said arrangements were made at the upstairs of the Masjid for those who sat for Ei'thikaf .

Abdul Rasheed Haji, Treasurer of Thaqwa Masjid Pumpwell, Kendra Juma Masjid Bunder and Eidgah Masjid Lighthill said Thaqwa Masjid, Kendra Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid witnessed considerable gathering as Muslims offered their last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan. He said Kerala based Thahir Saqafi addressed the gathering at Thaqwa Masjid and Mangalore Qazi Thwaqa Musliyar delivered sermons at Kendra Masjid, Bunder.

He said on the day of 'Lailatul-Qadr' people offered special prayers from 2.30 am to 4.00 am besides offering regular prayers.

Special prayers and sermons were held at different mosques around the city.

The last Friday of Ramadan is the culmination of the holy month of fasting and prayer, before the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which will fall on Sunday or Monday depending on lunar movements.

Bengaluru, Jul 15: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D K Shivakumar on Tuesday alleged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa led state government of corruption and said it had not spared even beds and pillows meant for COVID-19 patients to make "corrupt" money.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Congress leader said BJP government will be exposed in the coming days.

"It is nauseating that @BSYBJP govt has not even spared the beds and pillows meant for CoVid patients to make corrupt money from. There are many such scams involving ministers. Evidences about them will be placed before people and the BJP Govt will be exposed in the coming days," he tweeted.

Cabinet minister Jagadish Shettar on Monday announced a complete lockdown in Karnataka's Dharwad area from 10 am on July 15 to 8 pm on July 24 in a bid to control the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

According to the State's health department, Karnataka has a total of 41,581 positive cases so far, including 24,572 active cases and 16,248 recoveries.

So far, 757 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in the State.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Former Governor of Karnataka T N Chaturvedi passed away on Sunday late night at a private hospital in Noida.
He was 90.

T N Chaturvedi served as of Comptroller and Auditor General of India from 1984 to 1989. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1991.

An officer of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Chaturvedi held several key posts after retirement including Governor’s post of Karnataka and Kerala. He was the governor of Karnataka from 2002 to 2007 and held additional post of Governor of Kerala following death of then Kerala governor Sikander Bakht. He held the post from Feb 2004 to June 2004 and was replaced by newly appointed Governor.

An officer of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Chaturvedi held several key posts after retirement including Governor’s post of Karnataka and Kerala.

Expressing grief on the demise of T N Chaturvedi Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, in a tweet said, “T N Chaturvedi was an administrator par excellence, towering intellectual and true nationalist and he was known for his erudition, integrity and knowledge. He had an illustrious career in public life and served every role with distinction.”

Even former Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde condoled Chaturvedi's demise. "Humble tributes to our ex-Governor of Karnataka TN Chaturvedi who passed away last evening. He was an outstanding bureaucrat who was CAG in the 90's before becoming the Governor of our state. May his soul attain Sadgati. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti!" Hegde tweeted.

Mangaluru, May 15: In a shocking development, as many as 20 people from coastal Karnataka, who recently came from United Arab Emirates today tested positive for covid-19.

More than 175 repatriates were brought from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport on May 12. Among them residents of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were quarantined in their respective district. 

The throat swabs of all the passengers were sent for covid-19 testing on the following day. 21 of them obtained positive report today. Among those tested covid-19 positive, 15 are residents of Dakshina Kannada and five are from Udupi district. 

They were shifted to covid-19 hospitals in their respective districts today.
