Six CFAL students from M'lore qualify for NTSE exams

Mangalore, August 18: Six students trained at Center for Advanced Learning (CFAL), Kuntikan, Mangalore have qualified in the national level NTSE (National Talent Search Examination) held in May 2012.

Addressing mediapersons at a press meet in Mangalore, Mrs. Severine Rosario, Principal, Center for Advanced Learning, Kuntikan, Mangalore, said that a total of 43,833 students from the state of Karnataka appeared for the state level NTSE exam and the Department of State Education and Research Training (DSERT) had selected a total of 233 students. Of these students, 81 have qualified in the National Level scholarship. CFAL has the highest selections in Mangalore with six students qualifying in this prestigious national level examination. The awardees will receive a scholarship of Rs. 6,000/- per annum starting from class nine and the scholarship will continue until they obtain their Ph.D's.

The six selected students are Shishirdeep of Delhi Public School, Shashank P of Sharada Vidyalaya, Madhu Nayak of St Theresa's Bendoor, Manoj of Delhi Public School and Pradyumna B and Karan Gupta of KV-Panambur.

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) awards 1000 scholarship each year to talented students selected through its National Talent Search Scheme and in order to encourage their talent, financial assistance in the form of scholarship is provided. The awardees receive a scholarship of Rs. 6,000/- per annum starting from Class nine (IX) until Ph.D. level. In 2010-11, four students and in 2009-10, two students from Center for Advanced Learning were selected as National Talent Scholars and they have been receiving this prestigious scholarships.

Speaking on the occasion, students Shishirdeep and Shashank P said that they had received good training from CFAL and that they were happy to be selected as National Talent Scholars.

Starting from 2012-13, the National Talent Search Examination will be held for students of Class 10 (Std X) instead of Class 8 (Std VIII). The dates for state level and national level examinations have been fixed for 18.11.2012 & 12.05.2013 respectively. The application forms for state level examination are now available.

Bengaluru, Apr 21: Karnataka cabinet on Monday decided to continue the COVID-19 lockdown measures currently in force in the state till May 3 without any relaxation, Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister J C Madhuswamy said.

However, leaving a window open, it authorised chief minister B S Yediyurappa and the COVID-19 Task Force to meet in three or four days to review and take further decision about any relaxation, he told reporters.

"Today cabinet has decided it (the norms) will be extended up to May 3... there will be no relaxation and the situation that that exists as of today will continue," he said.

Pending the cabinet decision, chief secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar had on Sunday issued fresh orders directing the continuation of the stringent lockdown measures issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs till the midnight of April 21.

Meanwhile, five new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Karnataka, taking the total number of infections in the state to 395, the Health department said on Monday.

"Five new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon... Till date 395 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 16 deaths and 111 discharges," the department said in its mid-day situation update.

All the five fresh cases are from Kalaburagi and contacts of patients who have already tested positive.

Four of them are men of age 17, 13, 50 and 19, and one woman aged 30.

Udupi, Jun 18: Two youths lost their lives in a ghastly road mishap involving a vegetable-laden mini truck near Santhekatte in Udupi today. 

The deceased have been identified as Dinesh (35) and Manjunath (21), both hailed from Balkur village in Kundapur taluk.

The accident took place at around 7 a.m. when the mini truck was carrying vegetables from Kundapur to Udupi. 

According to sources, Dinesh, who was driving the vehicle, lost control and rammed into a pole next to the national highway. 

Both Dinesh and his assistant Manjunath suffered head injuries in the accident. They were rushed to Ajjarkad district hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.

Udupi, Jan 7: The Malpe Beach Utsav will be held on February 1 and 2, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district G Jagadeesh said on Tuesday.

According to a release issued here, the festival, which was slated to be held between December 29-31, had been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

The DC said various beach sports and cultural events have been organised to mark the Utsav.
