Exodus, a blemish on Karnataka's image: Veerappa Moily

Mangalore, August 20: The recent mass exodus of people from the northeast from Karnataka to their respective states is a major blot on the state's rich legacy that has always given shelter to people, according to Union minister for power M Veerappa Moily. "While the state government has handled the situation well by taking series of steps, the exodus could have been prevented if they had acted on Centre's advisory on providing protection to the people from those states in time," he added.

He added that the state police's intelligence apparatus should have been on the alert following the advisory. "The state has to be on the alert in the future to prevent recurrence of such incidents. Karnataka has always prided itself on being a state with a large heart and this rich legacy has been tarnished a wee bit," he added.

Karnataka has never discriminated against anyone. "We have a history where poet-saint Sri Ramanuja took shelter in Melkote after he faced trouble in Tamil Nadu. The state wholeheartedly welcomed Tibetans when they faced problems by setting up camps for them. Even Sri Lankan Tamilians were accommodated here and Kashmiri students were given special privileges when I was the CM," he said.

Decrying attempts in certain quarters to politicize Assam riots and the resultant exodus, Moily said the UPA government has taken steps to prepare the National Population Registry, which will set to rest questions on illegal migrants.

Hubballi/Vijayapura, Feb 26: A 40-year-old resident of Talikoti town in Vijayapura was arrested on Tuesday and charged with sedition for allegedly saying 'I Love Pak Army' on a social media page and sharing a video of a song, 'Pakistan Zindabad'.

Police said they registered an FIR against Meru alias Merusab Hasansab Byagwat on a complaint filed by a contractor, Ashok Rathod of Nebgiri Tanda.

Byagwat has been booked under IPC sections pertaining to sedition (124A), promoting enmity between communities and making assertions prejudicial to national integration (153 A & B), among others.

In his complaint, Rathod said Meru had posted the video on his social media account on February 22. Rathod said he took a screenshot of the video and made some inquiries before approaching police.

Police said Meru would be produced in court soon.

Police said they are keeping a watch on pro-Pakistan activities. On Monday, slogans praising Pakistan surfaced on the walls of a government primary school in Budarsinghi. In the third week of February, three Kashmiri students shot a video hailing Pakistan and circulated it on social media in Hubballi.

Mangaluru, Apr 20: The Dakshina Kannada district administration had declared certain areas in the district as containment zones after COVID-19 positive cases were detected from there.

A seal down has been declared in these zones, completely banning all movement of the people including leaving their houses.

In Ajjavara, Sullia taluk a one-kilometre containment zone has been set up on April 19.

The zone stretches from Ankotimar Road and includes Forest agriculture land and the residences of Savera and Achar.

Mangaluru, May 8: Migrant workers, stranded in Karnataka due to lockdown, staged a protest on Friday at the Central Railway Station here, demanding to be sent back to their respective native places.

The workers demanded the state government to take measures and send them back to their homes.

Maintaining social distancing and covering their faces with masks, the workers were holding placards which read -- "We want to go home Jharkhand, We want justice and we want to go home."

They appealed to the state government to arrange trains and buses to ferry them to their native places and threatened to walk home if denied transport.

Several protests have erupted in different parts of the country, such as Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, as stranded labourers took to the roads demanding to be sent back home.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on May 1 had issued an order to extend the ongoing lockdown by two more weeks from May 4 with some relaxations.
