Mangalore airport records Rs 9.5-cr operating profit

Mangalore, August 21: The Mangalore airport recorded an operating profit of Rs 9.5 crore for 2011-12.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function of the airport's diamond jubilee celebration committee, M.R. Vasudeva, Mangalore Airport Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), said that the income of the airport during 2011-12 was Rs 42 crore. It incurred an expenditure of around Rs 32.5 crore during the year. The operating profit stood at Rs 9.5 crore.

The airport, which suffered a loss of Rs 2.5 crore during 2002-03, has seen significant growth in traffic and revenue in the recent years. During 2002-03, the income of the airport was Rs 4 crore and expenditure was Rs 6.5 crore, he said. Vasudeva said that civil and electrical works related to air cargo complex at Mangalore airport has been completed at a cost of Rs 45 lakh.

The AAI has written a letter to the Customs Department to make AAI the custodian of cargo at the airport. The air cargo complex is planned at the old terminal building of Mangalore airport. Recently, Union Power and Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily, had stated that the Union Civil Aviation Ministry had informed him of the early commissioning of air cargo complex.

This followed Moily's participation in the exporters' convention in Mangalore recently, which was organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations. In that meet, exporters had stressed the need for an air cargo complex at Mangalore airport with cold storage facilities for agro products.

On the other projects at the airport, Vasudeva said that nearly 20 per cent of the work on the construction of an air traffic control block has been completed at the airport. He hoped that the civil works on this project could be completed by January.

Udupi, Jan 19: Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitaraman has said the mutt tradition in Udupi is a unique tradition and a perfect example of the country’s rich heritage of spirituality.

Speaking at the Darbar organised for the incoming Paryaya Admar Mutt seer Sri Eeshapriya Theertha Swamiji at Rajangana, here Saturday night, she said, “Paryaya festival is not just an event. It represents the presence of the Lord. I am conscious about the history. I am immensely blessed to be associated with the Krishna Mutt in one or the other.”

She turned nostalgic and traced her connection with the Krishna mutt which started in her childhood. “I am attached to the Mutt and temple due to my maternal uncle. My uncle was a bank employee and he spent his career in Manipal. I am being drawn to the mutt for the past 25 years. I am blessed immensely by the seers of the mutt and Lord Krishna.”

Mangaluru, Mar 22: A video being circulated in the social media purportedly of a man infected with COVID-19 at a hospital here is fake, its authorities said.

The video which shows a youth, dressed in pink trousers and wearing a mask, struggling to breathe on a blue hospital bed, had gone viral after which the Wenlock hospital issued a clarification.

The video started circulating after Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner made public Sunday that a person has tested positive for coronavirus at the hospital.

"A video of a patient convulsing on a hospital bed is being circulated on social media. This video is not of Wenlock hospital. Besides, we do not use blue beds," the hospital said in a statement, adding that they will file a complaint with the police regarding the video.

The first COVID-19 case in the district was confirmed at the hospital on Sunday.

The 22-year old man who came here from Dubai was tested positive and is under treatment in the isolation ward.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday advised people not to visit temples, mosques and other places of worship during the coming festival season.

"COVID-19 is now spreading rapidly in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru. The festival season is starting with Varamahalakshmi festival on July 31, followed by Bakrid, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Gowri Ganesha, Moharram and then Onam. This festival season is the riskiest time for the spread of the coronavirus. Therefore, please STRICTLY follow the rules in order to stay safe. Do not visit religious places even if they are officially declared open," a notification from BBMP said.

In the context of Bakrid, unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) was prohibited in BBMP limits on roads and sidewalks, religious places, school and college premises, playgrounds and other public areas, as per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act of 1976.

"Unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) is a punishable offence under Section 3 of the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959 and Rules and the Amendment Act 1975, which provides for a maximum penalty of six months or Rs 1000, or both. According to the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959, slaughter-worthy animals can only be slaughtered in official slaughterhouses," the notification said.
