NRI arrested for using Dubai Police logo in Kasargod

Kasargod, August 21: A 30-year-old youth, who tried to show off his 'Gulf power' by driving a car with the 'Dubai Police' logo, has landed in the police net in Kasargod.

Abdul Jabir, who came from Dubai to celebrate Eid with his family, was rounded up by the Kasargod police along with four of his friends for violating the Motor Vehicles Act and various other offences under the Indian Penal Code or IPC.

Kasargod police station sub-inspector, Narayanan, said that the five were arrested after they received alerts from people saying that the youth was driving his Honda City car rashly through the crowded town on Sunday causing risk to other vehicles and pedestrians on Sunday. The logo contained the Arabic word 'Shurta Dubai'.

This, the police official said, was a serious offence as none can alter a vehicle under the MV Act. Abdul had also tried to misguide the people by sounding the siren. Narayanan said that the youth had told the police that had did this to impress the people.

The youth has been charged under Section 52 (altering the vehicles) and section 181 (driving without a valid licence) of the MV Act and Section 279 (rash driving), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) and 153 (making provocation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police official said that they had received some threatening calls from abroad following the arrest of Abdul and his friends. A caller, who claimed to call from London, abused the police.

The youth and his friends were later let off on bail. Abdul, a native of Alampadi in Kasargod town, has been working in Gulf for the last seven years. With the cases now hanging over his head, it will be difficult for the youth to return to his work place.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: State officials will conduct Common Entrance Test (CET) exam as per the instructions given by the state high court, said Karnataka deputy chief minister CN Ashwathnarayan on Tuesday.

"Officials have informed that they are all set to conduct exams on July 30 and 31. We will put this matter in front of the high court. As per the instructions of the high court, we will move forward," said Ashwathnarayan.

This comes after Karnataka High court asked the state government to reconsider the decision of conducting the CET exam.

"...I had called an emergency meeting with district collectors, officials of education, transport, health, police department. And, I took information about the preparedness for conducting the CET exam," he added.

Karnataka CET Exam is a state-level entrance exam organised for providing admissions in Engineering, Pharmacy, B Pharma and other courses offered by colleges and institutions located in the state.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: No bandh-like situation prevailed in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, despite a nationwide strike called by trade union employees. Day-to-day activities are not disturbed, as buses and auto-rickshaws are moving as usual. 

However, in Bunder area, one of the business hubs of Mangaluru city, most of the shops today remained shut. As a result business was partially hit in the coastal city.

In other parts of Mangaluru city business firms, and market places are also open. Schools and colleges have not declared a holiday. government offices are also functioning as usually.

However, branches of many banks, excluding SBI, are closed for customers.

Members of various trade unions took out a rally and staged a protest in front of the Town Hall in Mangaluru.

Along with minimum wages, cancellation of contract labour system, no privatisation, welfare of farmers and other demands were also highlighted by the protestors. 

Slogans were also raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and anti-labour policies of his government. 

Members of AITUC, TUCC, AIUTUC, AIDYO, AIBEA, BSNLEU, INTUC, AIIEA, and associations of Anganwadi workers, mid-day meal workers, medical representatives, KSRTC employees, gram panchayat employees, and others took part in the protest.

Bengaluru, Mar 7: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday said that the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) will be completed within the next three years.

Speaking in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said: "After discussing with the officials of the finance department, we have decided to allocate Rs 10,000 crore funds for the third phase of UKP. This project will be completed within a span of three years."

Yediyurappa also said that the government will hold talks for additional funds from the Central government.

The leader of Opposition, Siddaramaiah, interrupted and said that the CM has announced this just to gain the confidence of MLAs from north Karnataka.

"The government could have announced it in the budget itself or else the Chief Minister could have announced it at the time of discussion on the budget. Where are the funds with the government to complete the project? CM has announced this just to gain the confidence of MLAs who hail from north Karnataka," said Siddaramaiah.

Deputy Chief Minister Govinda Karajol while speaking to the media welcomed the Chief Minister's statement and said that the earlier government didn't allocate a single penny in the last seven years he added.
