Teenager drowns, another rescued in separate incidents

Bhatkal/Mangalore, August 22: A 16-year-old boy drowned in the Arabian Sea at Murudeshwar in Bhatkal taluk on Tuesday.

He was identified as Mohammad Suhail (16) of Sagar in Shimoga district. He had come to Murudeshwar with his 12 friends and went to the sea for a swim. The body is yet to be recovered.

In a separate inciden, lifeguards of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project (PBTDP) rescued a youth from drowning on Tuesday. The survivor has been identified as Ansar (21), a resident of Mallur Badriyanagar post, Neerumarga.

Part of a group of revellers who had come to Panambur beach, Ansar consistently ignored warnings of lifeguards while frolicking in the water and was sucked away by a rip current even before he could react.

Lifeguards who spotted Ansar flailing in the sea immediately dived in after him and brought him ashore. "Ansar is fine," said Yathish Bykampady, CEO of PBTDP.

Ansar was part of a group that had come from Neermarga area on the outskirts of the city.

The group was not paying heed to warnings from the lifeguards about rip currents in the area and Ansar almost paid for it with his life but for their timely intervention, Yathish said.

The lifeguards obtained a statement from Ansar and informed the Panambur police about the incident. Yathish said such incidents are now commonplace.

"On many occasions, people, especially youth whom we have saved from drowning at the beach have gone back home and claimed they have never gone to the beach," he said.

On July 14, the lifeguards had rescued Shwetha, a girl from Bangalore, from drowning.

Bengaluru, June 21: Three youngsters lost their lives when an alleged wheeling stunt turned near Jakkur flyover in the city today morning. 

The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Hadi, Ahmed Khan and Syed Riaz, all residents of Nagavara Govindapura.

The tragedy took place at around 6:30 a.m. While two among them died on the spot, the third one breathed his last at a hospital, soruces said.

Yelahanka traffic police have registered a case in this regard.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 26: The Kerala Police on Wednesday arrested a man who had threatened people protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi on social media.

"The person was arrested by Agali police in Palakkad district for trying to instigate communal violence," the Police said.

On Tuesday, Kerala DGP Lokanath Behera had said that strict action will be taken against those who try to create any communal divide.

"Action will be taken against those who create or forward such messages that create communal tension through social media. All messages on social media are under police surveillance," he said.

Bengaluru, July 15: The family members of a 67-year-old man, who had developed some symptoms of Covid-19, was in for a rude shock when a “reputed” private hospital in Bengaluru’s Whitefield quoted estimated bill of Rs 9.09 lakh for 10 days.

The elderly man was rushed to Columbia Asia Hospital even before receiving his covid-19 test report. But after a look at the estimated bill, the family chose not to admit him there.

The break-up of the estimated bill included Rs 1.40 lakh for ventilator, Rs 3 lakh for medicines, medical supplies and consumables, Rs 2 lakh for laboratory investigations, Rs 75,000 for room rent, Rs 75,000 towards professional fee, Rs 58,500 for nursing charges, Rs 35,000 for radiology investigations and physiotherapy, and Rs 25,000 for equipment and surgical items.

The hospital authorities reportedly told the family members that the actual bill could be higher in the event of complications, unanticipated extension of stay and comorbidities.

“He was tested on Sunday and we were waiting for the result. On Monday, he started gasping for breath. Columbia Asia Hospital told us they had an ICU bed and we rushed him to the emergency care. When they showed us the estimate, we were shocked,” said Abdul Bashir, a nephew of the patient.

“We then contacted Dr Taha Mateen of HBS Hospital through an NGO ‘Mercy Mission’. We got him admitted there for just Rs 25,000,” he said adding that Hospitals should not take advantage when emotions are running high.
