World Konkani centre to distribute Rs 2cr scholarship among 1300 students

Mangalore, August 22: Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund, established by World Konkani Centre, Mangalore will award Scholarships worth Rs 2 crore to over 1300 students from economically backward families of Konkani Communities studying in a wide range of academic disciplines.

The award ceremony will be held on Saturday, the August 25 at 11.00 a.m. at T.V. Raman Pai Convention Hall, Kodialbail, Mangalore, stated press release issued here by Venkatesh N Baliga, Secretary, Vishwa Konkani Kendra.

Scholarships for 480 Engineering and MBBS students will be distributed on this occasion by Oscar Fernandes, Member of Parliament in the august presence of T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman, Manipal Universal Learning. N. Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly will be Chief Guest of the Function. K.B. Kharvi, President of Karnataka Konkan Kharvi Mahajan Sabha will grace the function as guests of honour.

Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund

'Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund' envisages grant of educational scholarship to economically backward students having Konkani language as their mother tongue. It was instituted in the year 2010 as envisioned by the eminent thinker and corporate leader T.V.Mohandas Pai as a Stream Concept (Collect & Distribute). VKSSF has successfully raised and distributed Rs. 50 Lakhs to 162 deserving students in the year 2010 and Rs. 1.00 Crore to 547 students in 2011. VKSSF has now evolved in to a large Scholarship Programme with over 1300 beneficiaries and Rs. 2 Crore worth of Scholarships in the year 2012.

Eminent Konkani Philanthropists like T.V. Mohandas Pai, Dr. T. Ranjan Pai, K. V. Kamath, Ramadas Kamath U., Jagannath Shenoi, Dr. P. Dayanand Pai, Ronald Colaco, Madam Grace Pinto, A. Annappa S. Kamath, Rohan Monteiro, Pradeep G. Pai and joined hands with VKSSF in strengthening the stream of Funds.

This year for the Flagship Programme of Engineering and MBBS Scholarships, Online Application Window period was open from 10th June 2012 up to 10th July 2012. More than 400 applications received apart from 280 re-applications by beneficiaries of 2010 & 2011 batch. A network of referees and verifiers across the country comprising of Doctors, Chartered Accountants and Educationists worked towards selection of over 480 most deserving and meritorious students from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa belonging to different castes and religions with Konkani as their Mother Tongue.

New Initiatives


PU and Degree Scholarship Programme


Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund has designed a new scheme to support educational quest of PUC and Degree Students with an outlay of Rs. 40 Lakhs.

In a major attempt to empower socially and economically backward Konkani Speaking people, 550 PU and Degree Students from communities such as KHARVI and KUDUBI of Karnataka state have been selected for this New Scholarship Programme. Under this scheme the students will receive Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 5,000 for I PU and I Degree respectively in the year 2012. Apart from the above, 100 Degree Konkani Students from Kerala State are also been selected for award of scholarships under the new scheme as a special thrust.

This New Scheme is in accordance to the announcement made in the last year's Scholarship Award Ceremony by Chairman of the Fund Ramdas Kamath U. Scholarships under this programme will be distributed in a separate ceremony to be held in the month of September 2012.

Study Abroad Scholarship Programme


To support the aspirations of Konkani Students who want to pursue their advanced education in reputed universities abroad, VKSSF has instituted a Study Abroad Scholarship Programme. This year 10 Such Students will be awarded Rs. 1.00 Lakh each under the programme.

Governance of the Fund


As the Fund is functioning on the basis of 'Stream' concept, the entire amount generated every year will be distributed to the beneficiaries and no separate corpus will be maintained. Contributions to the Fund will be eligible for Tax Exemption under section 80(G) of the Income Tax Act.

'Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund' is administered by a Governing Council comprising eminent personalities. U. Ramadas Kamath, Senior Vice President, Infosys is the Chairman of the Fund and Pradeep G. Pai, Managing Director of Hangyo Ice Creams Pvt. Ltd., is the secretary. The council is also guided by Basti Vaman Shenoy, the founder and the president of World Konkani Centre and Board of Trustees of Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: Karnataka on Friday reported 464 discharges, its highest, as the state confirmed 271 new cases of COVID-19 and seven related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 6,516 and the death toll to 79.

In a significant development, the day also saw the total number of discharges overtaking the number of active cases in the state.

As of June 12 evening, cumulatively 6,516 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 79 deaths and 3,440 discharges, the Health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 2,995 active cases, 2,976 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 19 are in ICU.

The seven deaths include four from Bengaluru, two from Kalaburagi and one from Hassan.

Those from Bengaluru are three women aged 61, 65 and 49 and a 52-year old man.

Among the dead from Kalaburagi are two men aged 53 and 48 while a 60-year old man from Hassan also succumbed to the virus.

Out of 271 new cases, 92 are returnees from other states, majority of them from neighbouring Maharashtra.

While 14 are those who returned from other countries.

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Ballari accounted for 97 cases, followed by Bengaluru urban 36, Udupi 22, Kalaburagi 20, Dharwad 19, Dakshina Kannada 17, Bidar 10, nine each from Hassan and Mysuru, Tumakuru 7, Shivamogga 6, four each from Raichur and Uttara Kannada, three each from Chitradurga and Ramanagara, Mandya 2, and one each from Belagavi, Vijayapura and Kolar.

Udupi district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 991 infections, followed by Kalaburagi (816) and Yadgir (735).

Among discharges also Udupi tops the list with a total of 474, followed by Kalaburagi (345) and Bengaluru urban (299).

A total of 4,26,341 samples have been tested so far, with 9,835 on Friday alone.

So far 4,11,244 samples have been reported as negative, and out of them 9,139 were reported negative today.

Udupi, Feb 23: Karnataka's minister for Tourism and Culture CT Ravi on Sunday said that India is losing money as because people travel abroad to visit casinos.

Arguing that casinos are being used by countries to promote tourism, he took to Twitter to highlight the issue, saying, "During my interaction with FKCCI, I had mentioned that many countries have promoted Tourism through Casinos. Isn't it a fact that lakhs of Indians go abroad to play in Casinos? Can anyone stop them? At the moment, there is no proposal before Our Govt to set up Casinos here,' he tweeted in the morning.

He also urged the Central government to stop people from visiting abroad.

Yesterday, the minister had stated that he has no intention of developing "casino tourism" in the state.

"I only expressed my opinion on how other countries have promoted tourism, during a discussion. Casino tourism is one such thing, I have no intention of developing it here," Ravi had told media when asked to comment on Karnataka government's proposal of casinos in Coastal Karnataka.

"What I meant was many Indians go and spend there, our money should be spent here itself," he had said.

Bengaluru, Jun 28: Criminal cases will be lodged against people for not adhering to the COVID-19 protocol in the city, said a top police official on Sunday.

"Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and BBMP (officials) are on the streets to enforce wearing of mask and social distancing. Warnings now, criminal cases will follow," said Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao.

He exhorted people to insist on everybody wearing a mask and maintaining social distance.

"Urge every Bengalurean to enforce mask enforcement and social distancing. If people argue, call 100. We are ready to respond to your calls," said Rao.

Assuring the city residents, he said one should not worry about others being high and mighty while making sure everybody follows the Covid precautions.

"Don't bother about high and mighty factor, whosoever it is, just tell people around you to wear mask and not hanging around neck," said the Commissioner.

On Saturday, DCP Rohini Katoch Sepat conducted a special drive to ensure everybody is following the Covid rules.

"Conducted a special drive along with BBMP marshals, imposed fine for not wearing mask and social distancing," said Sepat.

The senior police officer had also sealed down some shops for not conforming to the social distancing directions.

Sepat personally made announcements through a megaphone, spoke to shopkeepers, pedestrians and walked the streets in enforcing the rules.

Similarly, Rao also warned commercial establishments of raids and legal action in the event of Covid rules violation.

"Shops, malls, banks, hotels, offices and establishments. All of you are already aware of precautions to be taken. If you do not implement mask wearing and ensure safe distance, city police will raid and initiate legal action," asserted Rao.

On Friday, Bengaluru North DCP Shashi Kumar closed down some shops which did not follow Covid rules and rewarded some shopkeepers who adhered to them with roses.
