Thieves attack watchman during burglary attempt; flee as jewellery shop alarm goes off

Udupi, August 24: A gang of burglars attacked a night watchman and made a futile attempt to burglar a jewellery shop near the City Bus Stand here in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

According to a complaint lodged with jurisdictional Udupi town police, the burglars barged into the Mangala Jewellery shop and beat up watchman Malappa Chinchagi. The group then dragged him to a nearby bathroom, where his legs were tied and he was gagged.

However, when the burglars opened the shutter, the alarm went off forcing the them to flee. The workers of the shop, who were staying in a room close by, called the owners and informed about the burglary attempt. The group had locked the room from outside.

The relatives of the owner of the jewellery shop rushed to the spot and admitted Mr. Chinchagi admitted to the local hospital.

The complainant said that the assailants were aged between 25 and 30 and spoke Hindi.

Karnataka Cong to have four working presidents?

Mysuru, Jan 20: As the Karnataka state Congress is still awaiting the appointment of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, MLA Satish Jarkiholi has said that in order to balance the caste and regional equations, All India Congress Committee (AICC) was planning to create four working presidents posts for KPCC.

Talking to media personnel here on Sunday, Mr Jarkiholi, who is considered to be in the race for the post, said that a clear picture about the constitution of additional posts of the working president in the KPCC would emerge in a week.

He added that it has been delayed due to the Assembly elections in Delhi.

20 special flights from Saudi to India announced; 3 and a half to Bengaluru; Sorry Mangaluru

Newsroom, Jun 2: The government of India has announced operation of another 20 special flights to repatriate stranded NRIs from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under Vande Bharat Mission.

All the repatriation flights will take off from three major airports – Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah – between June 10 and June 16. Most of the flights will land in Kerala.

The first flight from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka in the new schedule will be operated on June 11. It will take off from Jeddah with passengers from both Kerala and Karnataka. After landing in Kozhikode it will continue its journey to Bengaluru.

The next three flights – Dammam to Bengaluru on June 12, Jeddah to Bengaluru on June 13 and Riyadh to Bengaluru on June 15 – will directly fly to Karnataka.

Even though thousands of Mangalureans are stranded in Saudi Arabian cities due to lockdown, the government has not announced any flight to Mangaluru International Airport.

Bengaluru: 80 Namma Metro workers test COVID-19 positive

Bengaluru, Jul 14: More than 80 Namma Metro workers have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bengaluru on Tuesday, said Yashwanth Chauhan BL, public relations officer of Namma Metro.

"All safety and treatment protocols would be followed at the camps," he added.

These workers were staying in a camp near Nagavara-Gottigere lane, reach-6 of phase two. More than 200 contract workers of Larsen and Toubro who had come from different states have been tested after a labourer complained of fever.

All coronavirus positive workers were shifted to a COVID care centre while others were kept in isolation as per the guidelines.
