Kasargod, August 24: Deputy Leader of the Opposition Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has asked the Kerala State government to institute a high-level inquiry into the alleged murder of Democratic Youth Federation of India activist T. Manoj at Thanchangad during the party-sponsored State-wide hartal on August 2.

The government should hold an inquiry by an official holding the rank of no less than the Deputy Inspector General of police to book the culprits, Mr. Balakrishnan told reporters here on Thursday.

It appeared that the case was being scuttled by Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishan, succumbing to pressure from the Indian Union Muslim League leadership. No one was arrested in connection with the case 20-odd days after the incident, Mr. Balakrishnan said after visiting the Ambangattu residence of Manoj, who was the DYFI's Keekanam unit president, said.

When a school teacher in Manjeri got killed allegedly at the hands of the IUML workers, that party claimed that the teacher died of cardiac arrest. The same theory was being applied in the case of Manoj, who suffered serious internal injuries in manhandling, he said.

Mr. Balakrishnan accused the IUML of coming in the way of instituting a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the Marad communal clashes. He sought a CBI probe into the case.

He alleged that 64 police stations in the State, including a few in Kasaragod district, were being controlled by the IUML using its clout in governance.

On the continuing stalemate in resolving the issues faced by the endosulfan victims and their families, Mr. Blalakrishnan urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to visit the district to find a lasting solution.
