BCF to host educational scholarship meet – 2012 on Sunday

Mangalore, August 24: UAE- based Bearys Cultural Forum (BCF) will organise 'Educational Scholarship Meet – 2012' on Sunday, August 26 at Loyola Hall, St. Aloysius P.U. College, Mangalore.

Announcing this at a media conference here on Friday, B.M. Mumtaz Ali, Patron of BCF, said that approximately Rs. 15 lakh will be distributed among 450 students as scholarship this year. Students pursuing SSLC, degree, post-graduation, medicine, nursing, Ayurveda, BDS and various courses will be awarded with the scholarship irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. These students will be chosen on basis of their poor family background and excellence in specific field of study, he said.

There will be a career guidance seminar by renowned educational experts on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. which will be held for school students with poor background. Scholarships will be issued on the same day from 2 p.m. onwards. Mangalore Qazi Thwaka Ahmed Musliar will offer Du'a and Dr. B.K. Yusuf, President of BCF, will preside.

Dr. N.S. Chanappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Gulzar Banu, Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation, N. Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, B. Ramanath Rai, MLA of Bantwal, and U.T. Khader, MLA of Mangalore, will be the guests of honour, said Mr. Ali.

He said that one of the main focuses of the BCF was promoting education through career guidance classes and scholarships. BCF has been providing scholarships to students from the past one decade. While it was limited only to Beary students in the previous years, this year it will include all Kannadigas, especially from the coastal belt of Karnataka, he said.

Dr. Kaup Mohamed, General Secretary of BCF, M.E. Moolur, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Saleem Althaf and Latheef Mulki, Vice-Presidents of BCF, were present at the press conference.

Mangaluru, Feb 26: Customs officials at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday arrested a man for trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 26 lakh by concealing it in his rectum.

The accused has been identified as Moideen Arzan, a resident of Uppala, Kasaragod.

According to police, he arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight and was attempting to smuggle the gold which he had converted in the form of paste and concealed in rubber capsules inside his rectum.

Mangaluru, Apr 29: One person was arrested on charges of murdering a middle-aged couple on Wednesday in Yellinje near Kinnigoli.

The area falls under the jurisdiction of Mulky police.

Police said that the deceased were identified as Vincent D’Souza (50) and his wife Helina D’ Souza (45).

The arrested was identified as Alphonso (55). He will be sent to judicial custody, said police.

Mangaluru, Jan 24: The third annual nocturnal Mangaluru Kambala, also known as the Rama Lakshmana Kambala, will be held on the night of January 25 at Goldfinch City in Bangra Kuluru, Mangaluru Kambala Samithi president Brijesh Chowta announced on Friday.

The all-night Kambala will have six categories - Naegilu Kiriya, Hagga Kiriya, Naegilu Hiriya, Hagga Hiriya, Kane Halage and Adda Halage.

The event will be inaugurated at 0930 hrs on January 25 and another programme will be held at 1800 hrs.
