Mangalore, August 25: The government is willing to cooperate and encourage real estate developers if they come forward with housing projects for the poor and the lower middle class, said Jagadish Shettar, Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Speaking after inaugurating 'StateCon 2012' conference of CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India), Karnataka, at TMA Pai Auditorium in Mangalore on Saturday, Mr. Shettar said that reducing the number of slums in the state and providing homes for the poor is one among the many priorities of the state government. Organisations like CREDAI must work in the direction of building homes for the poor and the lower middle class and the state government is ready to extend help if such proposals are brought before it by real estate developers, Mr. Shettar said.

Stating that although real estate sector is the second largest employment generating sector in the country, Mr. Shettar said that environment conservation must also be of paramount importance to real estate developers.

The state government has earmarked 19, 065 crore for infrastructure development in the state, the Chief Minister said. Initiatives in PPP investments have been taken by the government whole-heartedly wherein 12 PPP projects are currently in operation and 21 others would see implementation, Mr. Shettar said. Development of roads, creation and expansion of minor airports, doubling of railway lines etc are also being given importance, he said, adding that the government also has plans of introducing the Karnataka Infrastructure Bill to improve the state's infrastructure and address issues concerning it.

Area Balakrishna Hegde, member of national executive committee of CREDAI and Sushil Mantri, State President, CREDAI, placed before the Chief Minister demands of a single window clearance system to ease out the process of sanction approvals which is now taking place in the form of about 170 permissions through 40 departments. The government takes about 3 years to grant approvals and hence it should work towards speeding up the process as delay in approvals results in hike of prices for inputs, the CREDAI representatives demanded. They also placed before the CM a demand to relax taxation norms for real estate developers as they are currently being made to pay VAT, service tax, as well as stamp duty. The government must confine tax payment from real estate developers to mere stamp duty, they demanded.

Suresh Kumar, Minister for Karnaraka Urban Development, said that the government will consider the single window clearance system and relaxation of taxes. The government aims at providing more houses to people at affordable prices at accessible distances, the Minister said, assuring full cooperation from his side in the initiatives of CREDAI in this regard. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar also invited representatives to a meeting to be convened soon to discuss the single window clearance and tax relaxation issues besides others.

N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly, J Krishna Palemar, MLA, Gulzar Banu, Mayor, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Ganesh Karnik, MLC, PMA Razzaq, President, CREDAI, Mangalore, K C Naik, founder secretary and former president of CREDAI, were present among others.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday filed his nomination as the party's candidate for the June 19 Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka.

The former union minister filed his nomination in the presence of KPCC President D K Shivakumar, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah and other senior party leaders at the office of Legislative Assembly Secretary M K Vishalakshi, who is the returning officer for the polls.

Ahead of filing of nomination, the Congress Legislature Party meeting was held under the leadership of Siddaramaiah, after which Shivakumar issued "B-form" to Kharge.

The Congress high command on June 5 had announced Kharge as the party's candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls.

The election is scheduled on June 19 to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka represented by Rajeev Gowda and BK Hariprasad of the Congress, Prabhakar Kore of the BJP and D Kupendra Reddy of the JD(S) that will fall vacant on June 25, with their retirement.

June 9 is the last date for filing nominations.

Congress with 68 MLAs in the assembly can win one of the four seats easily on its own, so Kharge's victory is said to be certain.

This will be the first stint in Rajya Sabha for Kharge, who has always got elected directly by the people in his political career spanning over four decades.

The leader, earlier popularly known as "solillada Saradara", (a leader without defeat), faced his first electoral loss in his political life against BJP's Umesh Jadhav in Gulbarga by a margin of 95,452 votes during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

A nine-time MLA and two-term Lok Sabha member, he had served as Congress floor leader in the previous Lok Sabha, and also as Union Railway and Labour Minister during the UPA government.

Kharge, who is 77-years-old, has also served as minister during several Congress governments in the state, and as KPCC President and Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly in the past.

His son, Priyank Kharge, is currently MLA representing Chittapur constituency and had served as minister during the previous Congress and coalition governments.

JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda is the JD(S) candidate.

The regional party that has 34 seats in the assembly is not in a position to win a seat in Rajya Sabha on its own, and will need the support from the Congress with its surplus votes.

A minimum of 44 votes are required for candidates to win.

BJP with 117 members in the assembly (including Speaker), can ensure easy victory in two seats.

The BJP's central leadership on Monday sprang a surprise by fielding Eranna Kadadi and Ashok Gasti as its candidates for the Rajya Sabha election ignoring the recommendations of the state BJP unit.

Bengaluru, Feb 21: A young woman in Bengaluru was detained today for holding a placard saying ''Free Kashmir'' at a demonstration in the city to protest against the arrest of college student Amulya Leona who had raised pro-Pakistan slogans at an anti-CAA rally a day ago.

The arrested has been identified as Ardra Narayan, a 20-year-old student of an engineering college at Malleshwaram in the city's western suburb.

"Ardra Narayan is being questioned at the Silver Jubilee Park police station after she was whisked away from the spot and detained for holding the placard with ''Free Kashmir'' written on it," Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said.

On a complaint by Sri Ram Sena activists, who were protesting against Amulya at the venue, the police booked a suo moto case against Ardra under sections 153A and 153B of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) for disturbing peace and harmony.

The placard also displayed ''Give Us Liberation'' and ''Freedom from India'', a Sri Ram Sena activist alleged.

The development comes a day after Amulya, 19, was arrested under section 124A of the IPC for sedition and jailed for 14 days for allegedly shouting "Pakistan Zindabad" at the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally at Freedom Park in the city centre on Thursday.

"We are trying to ascertain if there is any connection between Amuly and Ardra though she was alone at the spot holding the placard," Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) R. Chandrashekar told news agency.
