Karwar, August 26: The historic Mahabaleshwara Temple in Gokarn was burgled in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Rs. 1 lakh was suspected to be stolen from two donation boxes.
People were surprised because Mahabaleshwara Temple has a police outpost and also private security guards. The theft took place when the police and temple security personnel were on duty Friday night.
According to sources, the burglars entered the temple veranda by removing roof tiles and then broke open the grills to enter the temple. Two donation boxes kept beside the Nandi idol were broken and money stolen.
There was no sign of tampering on the two wooden doors of the sanctum sanctorum.
The temple management said that they had switched off the CCTV cameras before closing the temple Friday night. This raised many questions why the temple authorities had switched off the cameras inside the high security temple. The police were ascertaining whether it was just Rs. 1 lakh which was stolen.
Mahabaleshwara Temple attracts thousands of people every day as it is known as 'Atmalinga' of Lord Shiva in Hindu mythology. Gokarn police have registered a case.
