Deluge in Mangalore as coastal Karnataka receives heavy rainfall

Mangalore, August 26: Low lying areas in and around Mangalore were inundated due to the heavy rains that lashed across coastal Karnataka on Saturday and Sunday.

The South-West monsoon turned streets and bazaars into rivulets in the several parts of city including Yekkur, Jeppinamogaru, Pandeshwar and Kottara.

Merchants and buyers cursed the city fathers for not solving the age-old problem of accumulation of rainwater during the rainy season.

On Sunday morning entire Yekkur area looked like a lake. Streets and grounds were submerged in deep rainwater till in the evening. Water also entered into several houses and shops throwing normal life out of gear. Several houses have been damaged.

Major traffic muddles were reported from several parts of the city, in spite of weekend holiday.

Widespread, rather heavy to heavy rain was received in twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Mulki in Mangalore taluk of Dakshina Kannada district recorded maximum rainfall of 199.5mm in the state in this period.

In last 24-hours ending 8.30am on Sunday the state of Karnataka recorded a 24-hour surplus rainfall of 206% receiving 15.9mm actual weighted average rainfall against normal weighted average rainfall of 5.2mm.

Mangalore, May 30: The first chartered flight to the city of Mangalore, Karnataka in South India is scheduled to depart from the Ras Al Khaimah airport of UAE on June 1.

The SpiceJet flight, chartered by Praveen Shetty, chairman of the Fortune Group of Hotels and president of the Karnataka non-Resident Indian Forum (KNRI), will repatriate 105 staff members of the hotel group, who have been placed on leave, according to a statement issued here on Saturday.

Consul General of India to Dubai Vipul confirmed the reports and said the flight, which will depart at 0945 hrs, will carry home a total of 180 passengers.

Udupi, Jan 30: Fishermen in Udupi’s Malpe have netted ‘spanner crab’, a rare variety of deep sea crab, mostly found in Australia and Hawaiian coast.

Hundreds of onlookers were surprised to the see the catch when it was brought to Malpe harbour by the fisherman Prashanth Kunder and others on Tuesday evening.

Dr Shivakumar Haragi, Assistant Professor at Karnatak University, PG Centre Department of Marine Biology, Karwar identified this crab variety as ‘spanner crab’ and the scientific name of this crab is Ranina Ranina.

Ranina Ranina is mainly nocturnal as it remains active during night and is found buried in sand during the day .It is easily distinguished from other crab species in its habitat due to its red carapace and elongated midsection.

Resembling a frog in its shape, this crab species is found mainly in Africa, Hawaiian coast and also in the Great Barrier Reef, located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Its lifetime is seven to nine years and each crab weighs around 400-900 grams.

Prashanth Kunder and his associates have also netted a rare fish variety called yellow-edged lyretail. Another unique variety fish netted by Prashanth is epinephelus flavocaeruleus.

Bengaluru, Jun 28: The Karnataka government on Saturday issued an order, directing private hospitals not to deny treatment to patients with coronavirus and COVID-19 like symptoms.

"Non-compliance of this order will attract punishment under sections of Disaster Management Act 2005," an order read.

Meanwhile, people coming from Maharashtra will be placed in seven-day institutional quarantine followed by seven-day home quarantine in Karnataka, the state government said.

People coming from other states will need to undergo 14-day home quarantine.
