Bhatkal, August 27: In a gut-wrenching tragedy, a 22-year-old engineering student, who was run over by a speeding lorry while riding a scooter, died on spot due to excessive blood loss early on Monday morning here.
The victim has been identified as Praveen Kumar, a Bihar based final year mechanical engineering student of Anjuman Engineering College Bhatkal. His friend Tauqeer Ehsan from Uttar Pradesh, who was riding pillion sustained severe injuries in the accident.
The incident occurred at around 6:30 am near Pushpanjali Theater Railway Station Cross, when the duo was on its way to hostel from Railway Station.
Eye witnesses said that the scooter skidded while negotiating a curve on a slippery road. Within a few seconds the rider, who was thrown unto the road, was crushed to death by a speeding lorry. However the lorry driver sped away, , they said.
It is learnt that Kumar who had returned from Bihar last week after the vacation had been to receive Ehsan who had just come by a train from Lucknow.
The police shifted the body to Bhatkal government hospital for post mortem. As soon as the news spread, college board secretary Kashimji Abubakar, Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, vice president Mohammed Ansar Kashimji, general secretary Abdul Raheem rushed to the hospital. Bhatkal town police registered a case.
