Threat calls to young girls on rise'

August 27, 2012
Mangalore, August 27: Complaints on young girls receiving threat calls by miscreants in Moodbidri police station limits were raised at the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe monthly grievance meet at City Police Commissioner's office on Sunday.

Raising the issue, Dalita Hakkugala Horata Samiti President Lingappa Nanthoor said that the police have not yet arrested the culprit who had threatened a Dalit girl pursuing nursing education in a private college in Moodbidri. The girl had filed a complaint with Moodbidri police on July 25, but the police have failed to respond. It is not for the first time that Dalit girls are threatened by miscreants, but such incidents have occurred three to four times in the past. Ignoring such threats would lead to disastrous consequences like rape and murder, he said.

The nursing student who filed the complaint with Moodbidri police, alleged the police of not taking action against the culprit.

“I took off from my studies on a day and went to the police station as the police had asked me to visit the station. They had told me that they had arrested the culprit who had threatened me. But on reaching the station, I could not find the culprit whom they had apparently detained. But the police response was lethargic. They told that culprit was in the station the whole day but did not know how he escaped before my arrival,” she alleged.

She questioned how could a culprit detained by the police flee from the station without the knowledge of the police. Though a police constable went searching for the culprit, he could not find him, she said and demanded the police to take action at the earliest. Responding to the allegation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Mutthuraya assured of taking the matter into consideration.

Moodbidri Town Municipal member Koragappa flayed Moodbidri Tahsildar of demolishing the house of a Dalit member Sanjeeva, without serving any prior notice. “There are over 3000 illegal houses in Moodbidri town, but why have the authorities demolished only the house belonging to a Dalit,” he questioned. The DCP asserted that matter does not come under the purview of the police, but a complaint could be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard.

Dalita Sangharsha Samiti leader Keshava insisted the police to write a letter to the Revenue Department, so that the administration will consider the matter seriously.

Mangaluru, Apr 3: The Dakshina Kannada district administration’s decision to ban use of private vehicles, excluding permitted categories, from Friday for effective implementation of lockdown, began showing results since morning itself.

Mangaluru City Traffic Police and Dakshina Kannada district police erected several pickets at vantage places on arterial roads to check those moving without a valid reason. Several two-wheelers were seized during the checking while a few car drivers were let off with a strict warning.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M Manjunatha Shetty, who was supervising a picket at Hampankatta, said that movement of private vehicles has drastically reduced in the city.
