Mangalore, August 29: As many as 289 houses have been damaged in Dakshina Kannada district up to Tuesday following the onset of South-West monsoon and compensation amount of Rs 7.54 lakh has been provided to the affected families.
In Mangalore taluk, 64 houses have been damaged and compensation amount of Rs 1.43 lakh paid. Compensation has to be paid to 10 families whose houses were damaged in this monsoon season, a press release states.
In Bantwal, authorities have paid Rs 2.46 lakh as compensation in 82 cases, Rs 59,000 in 27 cases in Puttur taluk, Rs 1.34 lakh in 45 cases in Belthangady taluk, Rs 1.23 lakh in 53 cases in Sullia taluk, Rs 9,000 in four cases in Kadaba, and Rs 40,000 in 14 cases in Moodbidri. In Puttur, Rs 10,000 was paid in one case where loss of cattle head was confirmed. A sum of Rs 97,632 was paid in 53 cases of crop loss reported on 80.76 acres of agriculture land.
The horticulture department paid Rs 34,156 as compensation in 19 cases of losses reported to horticultural crops on 24.73 acres.
In all, the district administration on compassionate grounds has paid Rs 1.50 lakh each to next of kin of 10 people who died in natural calamity related incidents reported across the district from April 1 up to August 28.
The South-West monsoon has by and large been sporadic picking up steam across DK in the last week.
